Should I Have Lied? Dealing with a Friends Crush Reality Check
AITA for being brutally honest with my friend about her crush on our mutual friend, causing tension in our friendship?
A simple question about a crush turned into a friendship mess fast. One Reddit user says he tried to be honest when his close friend, Alex, asked whether their mutual friend Jake might like her back, and that honesty did not land well.
Alex has been crushing on Jake for a while, and everyone around her seems to notice except Jake himself. When she asked for a reality check, OP told her he did not think Jake saw her that way, which left Alex feeling hurt and unsupported.
Now the friendship is strained, the comments are piling up, and the whole thing comes down to one awkward question, was he being cruel, or just real?
So I'm (27M) and I have this close friend, let's call her Alex (28F). Alex has had a crush on our mutual friend, Jake (29M), for a while now.
It's pretty obvious to everyone except Jake. Alex often talks about Jake, gushes over him, and drops hints about her feelings whenever we all h**g out.
For background, Alex and I have been friends for years, and I consider her like a sister. Jake is a great guy too, but he's been single for a while and hasn't shown any romantic interest in Alex beyond friendship.
The other day, Alex asked me if I thought Jake liked her back. I could see how much she was invested in this, but I knew the truth.
So, I told her that I don't think Jake sees her in a romantic way and that it might be best for her to move on and not get her hopes up. She got upset and accused me of not being supportive or encouraging her.
Alex feels like I should have been more positive and uplifting instead of crushing her hopes. Now she's distant and avoiding me.
I feel like I was just being honest and saving her from potential heartache. But now our friendship is strained, and I don't know if I handled it the right way.
So AITA?
That honesty hit a nerve.
