Should I Share My Lottery Winnings with a Friend Who Contributed Once?

"Debating whether to share lottery winnings with friend who only contributed once - AITA for wanting to keep it all? 🤔"

Lottery wins turn friendships into math problems real fast, and this one is already getting messy. A 29-year-old guy says he and his buddy, Alex, have a weekly tradition: they buy tickets together, but he’s usually the one paying.

Then last week happened. The jackpot was huge, Alex insisted on contributing for once, and they actually won a substantial amount. Now Alex is acting like that one-time payment automatically earns him half the winnings, while OP insists he would’ve bought a ticket anyway and feels like Alex is trying to hop on the money train at the last second.

It’s a “we’re friends” situation that suddenly sounds a lot like a contract dispute.

So I'm (29M) and my buddy, we'll call him Alex, have this tradition of buying lottery tickets together every week. Last week, the jackpot was huge, and we decided to try our luck.

I usually buy the tickets, but this time Alex insisted on contributing, so we split the cost. Lo and behold, we won a substantial amount!

Now, here's where it gets tricky. Alex is claiming that because he contributed financially this time, he's entitled to half of the winnings.

However, I've been the one buying the tickets all this time and would've bought one regardless. I feel like he's just trying to hop on the money train conveniently.

WIBTA if I don't split the winnings with Alex, considering it was my initiative and money that bought the tickets?

This is similar to the AITA fight where a lottery winner refused to pay family bills after winning, sparking demands for ongoing support.

The weekly ticket ritual is fine until Alex pays this one time and suddenly calls dibs on the winnings.

OP points out he’s been the one buying tickets all along, which makes Alex’s “half” claim feel like a surprise rule change.

The jackpot win flips the mood from “fun tradition” to “who gets what,” and Alex is already framing it as earned entitlement.

OP is left deciding whether sharing the money keeps the peace or rewards what he thinks is opportunism.

If OP splits half with Alex, he might end up funding the next “tradition” with no say in the payout.
