Should I Split Vet Bills After Cousins Dog Attacked My Cat?

"Debating splitting vet bills after cousin's dog attacked my cat - AITA for refusing? Reddit weighs in on who should cover the costs."

A 28-year-old woman refused to split a $500 vet bill after her cousin’s German Shepherd attacked her calm, older indoor cat, Mittens. It sounds like a simple “dog got excited, cat got hurt” situation, until you add the family history, the power dynamics, and the money part.

Here’s how it went down: the cousin (30F) brought her large, excitable pup over for a visit, and while OP was in the kitchen making coffee, the dog cornered Mittens in the living room. Mittens ended up with a scratched nose, and OP rushed her to the vet for stitches and antibiotics.

Now the cousin is apologetic, but she’s also asking OP to split the costs, claiming it was “both animals” involved, even though the cat was in her own safe space and her dog was the one doing the attacking.

So I'm (28F) and my cousin (30F) recently got a new dog, a large and excitable German Shepherd. My cat, Mittens, is a calm and older feline who mostly keeps to herself.

For context, my cousin and I have always had a bit of a competitive relationship. We both love animals, but I've always been more of a cat person while she's into big, energetic dogs.

Last week, my cousin brought her dog over to my place for a visit. While I was in the kitchen making us some coffee, I heard a commotion in the living room.

When I rushed in, I saw her dog had cornered Mittens and, unfortunately, Mittens got scratched on the nose trying to defend herself. I immediately separated them and took Mittens to the vet.

She needed stitches and some antibiotics, but thankfully she'll be okay. The vet bills came to around $500.

When I told my cousin about the incident and the vet bills, she seemed apologetic but then asked if we could split the costs since it was technically both animals involved in the scuffle. I feel like her dog was the aggressor and Mittens was just defending herself.

Plus, Mittens is an indoor cat who was in her own safe space. I don't think it's fair for me to foot the entire bill when her dog caused the harm.

My cousin now feels like I'm overreacting and being unfair. She even hinted that if I don't agree to split the bill, it could create tension between us.

So, Reddit, WIBTA for refusing to split the vet bills with my cousin after her dog attacked my cat? Really need outside perspective.

This is similar to the AITA where someone insisted their sister pay after neglecting their pets' medical bills.

OP is still processing the panic of separating them and rushing Mittens to the vet, and now the cousin is acting like the fight was a shared responsibility.

The moment OP told her cousin the bill was about $500, the apology turned into a demand to “split it,” and that competitive vibe from past visits suddenly matters.

The real argument is that Mittens was defending herself, while her cousin’s German Shepherd is the one who cornered her in the living room during a casual coffee break.

Things get tense when the cousin implies OP will be “unfair” if she refuses, even though Mittens is an indoor cat who didn’t come into the situation with any risk.</p>

How would you handle this situation? Let us know in the comments.

Nobody wants to pay for a German Shepherd’s bad manners, especially when Mittens was just trying to survive the encounter.
