Should I Tip $0.75 on a $2.90 Order?
WIBTA if I gave a $0.75 tip on a $2.90 order? A moral dilemma arises when a customer debates the ethics of tipping based on a discounted bill.
Some people treat tipping like a math problem, and then reality shows up with the exact change you do not have.
In this Reddit post, OP is trying to be decent after ordering a pizza delivery on a coupon, so the food part is free and they only have to pay the delivery fee. They’ve got a little under $4, not enough to hit a full dollar tip, and they’re stuck on whether tossing $0.75, or even a few cents, feels insulting to the driver. OP also can’t leave work, so this is all about making the moment right from the payment window.
Then the plot twists, they brought the wrong pizza, apologized, and OP had to decide what “being nice” actually looks like.
Original Post
I don’t have any more cash on me, I have a little under $4 (not enough for a full dollar tip), my order was free (coupon) and I just have to pay the delivery fee. I want to tip the guy but I feel like tipping him cents would be a slap on the face as a driver, but something is better than nothing.
I’m conflicted and just want to be nice, but I think small or no tip he’ll probably dislike it anyway. Edit/Update: they brought me the wrong pizza and apologized.
I was able to scrape enough change for a $1 tip which makes me a tiny less of an a*****e. The place is across the road so I know they’re at least not wasting gas (I can’t leave work that’s why it had to be delivery).
I’ll make sure to keep more cash on me next time. I wasn’t raised in America and don’t really understand tipping besides that you should or you shouldn’t go back there but now I know you should tip on the original price.
Sorry to all the drivers that have had tips in cents.

OP is staring at a $2.90 order situation where the coupon wiped out the usual tipping math, and now the delivery fee is all that’s left to work with.
The driver is about to get cents, not dollars, because OP only has a little under $4 and can’t magically leave work to grab more cash.
The whole vibe flips when they realize the delivery went wrong, the driver brought the wrong pizza, then apologized for it.
OP scrapes together enough change for a $1 tip, hoping it makes up for the earlier fear that tipping in cents would feel like a punch to the ego.

Nobody wants to be the person who tips like a calculator, especially after the wrong pizza apology.
