Nathan Olsen turned a simple October drawing challenge into something much bigger than he expected, and the result is a comic series with witches, body swaps, and plenty of odd little surprises.

Witchflowers follows Iris Bloom, Sunflower Daffodil, Gardenia the cat, and Hettie the bird, with the main story still unfolding as Hettie and Sunflower trade bodies. Along the way, Olsen has kept posting stand-alone comics too, mixing in the same playful magic that helped the series catch on in the first place.

The first successful ongoing story in Sundae Comics is called "Witchflowers." The first episode was written and illustrated by the artist as part of the 2021 Inktober art project; the daily word prompt was "crystals."

That first comic clearly struck a nerve, and the series kept growing from there.

While many of the comics are joke-driven, the artist's original vision for the strip was to evoke the experience of reading the comics section of the Sunday newspaper. It is meant to be occasionally funny, occasionally heartwarming, and sometimes even feature a serialized adventure story or melodrama.
