Star Wars’ Welsh ‘A New Hope’ Is Finally Set for Release, but Fans Still Don’t Know if They Can Stream It Worldwide
Star Wars: Gobaith Newydd premieres on Christmas Day 2026, but international and Disney+ availability has not been confirmed.
A new version of Star Wars: Episode IV is on the way, but one of the biggest questions around it is still unanswered. Lucasfilm’s official Welsh-language A New Hope now has a release date, yet fans outside the UK may not know until later whether they will be able to watch it at all.
The project is Star Wars: Gobaith Newydd, described as the first official Welsh-language version of Star Wars: Episode IV, A New Hope. It was announced in August by Lucasfilm, Disney, S4C and Creative Wales, and it is scheduled to premiere on Christmas Day, December 25, 2026. The release comes ahead of the film’s 50th anniversary in 2027.
What is confirmed so far is the initial home for the film. It will air on S4C and across that broadcaster’s platforms from Christmas Day onward. The announcement also points to S4C’s platforms including S4C Clic and BBC iPlayer, but it does not say which of those services will actually carry this specific title.
The Welsh release also swaps in an entirely new audio cast. Matthew Rhys voices Han Solo, Rhys Ifans plays Obi-Wan Kenobi, Aimee-Ffion Edwards voices Princess Leia, Mark Lewis Jones plays Darth Vader and Osian Morgan voices Luke Skywalker.
That is the exciting part for Star Wars fans interested in hearing a new take on one of the franchise’s best-known films. The uncertainty is everything around access.

Why the release could still be hard to watch
At the moment, there is no confirmed word that Star Wars: Gobaith Newydd will launch internationally, and there is also no confirmation of a Disney+ release.
That matters because viewers outside the UK could run into regional restrictions if the film remains tied only to S4C’s services. S4C says many of its programs can be watched outside the UK on S4C Clic where legal agreements allow it, and it says it aims to make content available as widely as possible. But the broadcaster’s FAQ also says copyright limits prevent all of its programming from being shown internationally.
Taken together, that leaves the status of this particular Star Wars release unresolved. Fans in the UK at least have a date: Christmas Day 2026. Fans elsewhere have something less concrete, which is the possibility that wider streaming plans could still be announced.
For now, the change is simple even if the access picture is not. A New Hope is getting an official Welsh-language release, it begins on December 25, 2026, and the people most affected are Star Wars viewers outside the UK who are still waiting to learn whether they will be able to stream it.
