‘Star Wars’ Had An Alternate Plot Twist That Could’ve Changed The Entire Franchise Forever

Star Wars fans love arguing about canon, but this one alternate plot twist was so wild it could’ve flipped the whole emotional core of the prequels. It centers on Qui-Gon Jinn and Obi-Wan Kenobi, the two Jedi audiences thought they already understood.

In Liam Neeson’s early concept for Qui-Gon, things get messy fast. Qui-Gon was supposed to be the real Obi-Wan, while Ewan McGregor’s Obi-Wan would actually start out as Qui-Gon’s apprentice, then take on the “Obi-Wan” name after Qui-Gon’s death at Darth Maul’s hands. That means the classic A New Hope line, “Obi-Wan? Now that’s a name I haven’t heard in a long time,” would hit totally differently.

And then George Lucas changed his mind, before this name-swap could become the franchise’s most heartbreaking origin story.

That whole mind-bending setup starts with Qui-Gon Jinn, the character Liam Neeson was originally meant to anchor as the real Obi-Wan.

In the initial concept, Liam Neeson’s character, Qui-Gon Jinn, was set to be the real Obi-Wan Kenobi. Ewan McGregor’s character, whom we’ve come to know as Obi-Wan, would have been his apprentice, adopting his mentor's name after his tragic death.

This twist would have cast McGregor as the young Qui-Gon, taking on the identity of "Obi-Wan Kenobi" after his mentor's heroic sacrifice. It’s a plotline that would’ve added an entirely new layer to the Star Wars mythology, giving Obi-Wan’s journey a bittersweet origin.

This twist was designed to add a deeply emotional moment to the storyline. The idea was that Qui-Gon (the original Obi-Wan) would die at the hands of Darth Maul, and his apprentice would honor him by adopting his name and his quest. 

This would’ve put a powerful new spin on Alec Guinness’s portrayal of the character in the original trilogy. His famous line in A New Hope —"Obi-Wan? Now that's a name I haven't heard in a long time"—would have been cast in a completely different light.

Then Darth Maul shows up, because in this version, Qui-Gon’s death is the moment McGregor’s apprentice would steal the Obi-Wan identity.

George Lucas ultimately decided to stick to the more straightforward version of Obi-Wan's backstory. McGregor’s Obi-Wan remained the same character who would eventually mentor Luke Skywalker, while Qui-Gon Jinn was introduced as a separate, wise Jedi master destined for a tragic fate. 

This decision ultimately led to McGregor reprising his role as Obi-Wan in Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith, solidifying his place in the Star Wars universe. 

McGregor has since returned as Obi-Wan in the Disney+ series Obi-Wan Kenobi, bringing fans’ favorite Jedi master back to the screen. He also hinted that he’d be open to a second season.

Though the twist was scrapped before filming, it’s fascinating to imagine how it might have impacted the Star Wars legacy. Who knows what other secrets are still hidden in the galaxy's lore?

But Lucas ultimately kept McGregor’s Obi-Wan on the familiar track, and Qui-Gon Jinn stayed his own tragic legend.
