Struggling Siblings: AITA for Not Helping with Family Rent?
AITA for refusing to increase my contribution to family rent despite having a high-paying job, leaving siblings struggling financially?
A 28-year-old woman refused to raise her share of the family rent after landing a high-paying job, and her siblings are not letting it slide.
After their parents passed away, the five siblings agreed to keep the family house and split expenses equally. Now the rent is getting harder to swallow, and the siblings with lower-paying jobs are stuck making sacrifices just to cover their portions. Meanwhile, OP says she can afford to cover more without breaking a sweat, but she’s reluctant to change the original split, even after the pleas and the frustration.
So yeah, the family house is still standing, but the resentment is growing.

I (28F) come from a family of five siblings, including me. After our parents passed away, we decided to keep the family house and split the expenses equally.
However, I've recently landed a high-paying job while my siblings are struggling financially. For background, my siblings work in lower-paying jobs, and they have been finding it hard to keep up with the rising costs, especially the rent for our family house.
With my new job, I am financially stable and can afford to cover a larger share of the expenses without any strain. Despite their pleas for help, I have been reluctant to increase my contribution.
This has put them in a tough spot, forcing them to make sacrifices to cover their portions of the rent. They've expressed their frustration about the unfairness of the situation, highlighting that I should step up to support the family.
The dilemma lies in my desire to maintain my financial independence, despite the obvious disparity in our income levels. I understand their struggle, but I feel hesitant to bear the financial burden alone.
So AITA?

The moment OP’s “equal split” math hit her siblings’ rent reality, the pleas started coming in fast.
While OP’s new paycheck made her financially stable, her siblings were the ones cutting corners to keep the house afloat.
Every time her siblings called it unfair, OP kept pointing to her desire to stay financially independent.
Now the family dinner energy is basically “who pays more,” and the siblings are treating OP’s refusal like a betrayal.

OP may love the family house, but her siblings are starting to feel like they’re the ones paying for it.
