Struggling Siblings Clash Over Fairness in Splitting Family Bills
AITA for requesting an even split of family bills, causing tension with struggling siblings?
Alex, Sam, and their brother OP thought splitting bills equally would keep the peace. Spoiler: it did not.
They moved in together a year ago, all of them trying to save money on rent, utilities, and groceries, and they agreed to an even split. But for the past few months, both Alex (28F) and Sam (32M) have had money problems tied to unexpected expenses. Instead of just tightening their belts, they asked OP to reevaluate how the bills get divided, arguing they are struggling more than him.
Now the apartment is full of passive-aggressive comments and resentment, and OP is wondering if he crossed a line.
Original Post
So I'm (30M), and I live with my two siblings, Alex (28F) and Sam (32M). We all moved in together a year ago to save money on rent, utilities, and groceries.
When we started sharing expenses, we agreed to split everything equally to be fair. For the past few months, both Alex and Sam have been struggling with their finances due to some unexpected expenses.
They asked if we could reevaluate how we split the bills since they felt like they were struggling more than me. While I sympathized with their situation, I also have my own financial obligations and can't afford to cover more than my share.
I suggested that we stick to the original plan of splitting things equally, but they were not happy with that. Alex accused me of being selfish and uncaring, pointing out that family should support each other during tough times.
Sam remained mostly quiet during the discussion, which made things even more tense. Now, there's a palpable tension in our home, with passive-aggressive remarks and a general feeling of resentment.
I never intended to cause this rift, but I also feel like I shouldn't bear the financial burden alone. So AITA?

It’s also like the AITA case at the woman who asked siblings to cover their fair share after paying alone.

When OP says he sympathizes but cannot cover extra, Alex immediately flips it into a “family should support each other” argument.
That’s when Sam staying mostly quiet turns the conversation into a tense standoff instead of a real discussion.
After OP refuses to change the original equal split, the house starts running on side-eye, comments, and unresolved anger.
With Alex calling OP selfish and Sam’s silence hanging over everything, OP is left staring at a fairness agreement that no longer feels fair to anyone.
How would you handle this situation? Let us know in the comments.
The family bills weren’t the real problem, the fairness fight was.
