Surprising My Family with a Plant-Based Dinner: AITA for Not Warning Them?

AITA for surprising my meat-loving family with a plant-based dinner? Their reactions were unexpected, and now I'm questioning if I overstepped.

Some family dinners are built on tradition, the same recipes, the same expectations, and the same unspoken agreement that nobody is going to “experiment” with the menu. This one started like that, until a 29-year-old vegan environmental enthusiast decided to make a point with zero warning.

OP hosted the weekly dinner at home, then served a completely plant-based meal to his dad, who is a proud meat person and treats meat-centric cooking like a family legacy. His dad was visibly upset, complaining he was “missing the main course,” while OP’s mom tried to smooth things over and OP’s younger sister took polite bites but clearly was not blown away.

Now OP is stuck wondering if he meant well, or if he totally overstepped by springing the vegan switch on guests.

So, I'm (29M) and consider myself an environmental enthusiast. I recently went vegan and was excited to share my newfound passion with my family.

Quick context: my family, especially my dad, are big meat lovers and are quite traditional when it comes to meals. Last night, I hosted our usual weekly family dinner.

Without warning, I decided to surprise them by serving a completely plant-based menu. I was thrilled to showcase how delicious and sustainable vegan dishes can be.

The reactions were...not what I expected. My dad, who prides himself on his meat-centric cooking, was visibly upset.

He made comments about feeling like he was 'missing the main course' and 'where's the real food.' My mom tried to keep the peace, but I could tell she was disappointed too. My younger sister, who is somewhat open to new things, tried the food politely but didn't seem too impressed.

After the dinner, my dad pulled me aside and expressed his frustration. He mentioned feeling disrespected that I didn't consider their preferences, especially since they were guests in my home.

He also pointed out that I knew their love for meat and that I should have at least given them a heads-up about the menu change. I thought I was sharing something important to me and hoped they would appreciate the gesture.

But now, reflecting on their reactions, I'm starting to wonder if I overstepped. So AITA?

OP thought his family would love the “delicious and sustainable” surprise, but his dad immediately clocked the lack of meat like it was a personal attack.

After the “where’s the real food” comments and the awkward attempts to keep things normal, the dinner stopped feeling like a meal and started feeling like a lecture.

When dad pulled OP aside after everyone ate, the argument shifted from recipes to respect, and the word “disrespected” entered the chat.

Now OP is replaying the night, because the only thing louder than the plant-based menu was his family’s disappointment in not being warned.

The plant-based dinner may have been his dream, but for his dad it looked like an uninvited rule change.
