Teen Asks AITA for Playing Music Out Loud in Living Room

AITA for playing music out loud? Teen faces parental wrath for listening to rap with explicit lyrics - seeking judgment on the situation.

Teen life is supposed to be loud, messy, and full of “oops,” but this kid’s living room turns every volume change into a potential crime scene. One minute he’s gaming downstairs, the next he’s dealing with a dad who treats headphones and profanity like personal attacks.

Here’s the setup: OP, 15, says his parents moved his computer downstairs to the living room and handed him a mountain of rules. His dad has already smashed his headphones after OP got an A- on a math test. So when OP plays video games and cranks music because it’s his usual rap playlist, his dad hears the swear words and goes nuclear.

The question is not just “was the music too loud,” it’s whether this family’s rules come with a side of destruction.

Original Post

I(15m) got my setup moved downstairs to the living room by my parents(44m&f). They have a huge list of rules for me to follow, and if I don’t, I get my stuff broken.

Today, I got home from school and decided play some video games on my computer. Earlier this month, my dad got angry that I got an A- on my math test and smashed my headphones into the pavement.

So while I was playing video games, I decided to listen to some music. I mostly listen to rap, so there are quite a few swear words.

My dad heard this and started getting really angry at me, and he decided to break my monitor. He says I’m being an a*****e to him because it’s technically his monitor because minors can’t own property.

AITA?

The whole situation is already on thin ice because OP’s dad smashed his headphones earlier after an A- on his math test.

Then OP tries to decompress with music while gaming, even though it’s full of swear words from his rap playlist.

When dad hears it, the anger escalates fast, and he decides to break OP’s monitor like that fixes the problem.

To top it off, dad claims he can do it because the monitor is “his” since minors supposedly can’t own property.

Now OP has to wonder if “following the rules” is even the real issue, or if the real issue is dad’s temper.
