Teen Faces Backlash for Removing Shirt in Changing Room: AITA?

In a dilemma over changing room etiquette - was it wrong to remove a shirt in a changing room? Read the debate on boundaries and body positivity.

A 15-year-old girl just wanted to change after gym, but one tiny moment in the changing room somehow turned into a full-blown reputation problem. And now she’s stuck wondering if she accidentally crossed a line, or if everyone else is overreacting.

She says she was warm, flat-chested, and not wearing a bra because sensory issues make it feel worse than helpful. She was facing the wall, and she only lifted her gym shirt briefly before putting her school shirt back on. Still, she admits there was a small gap where someone could potentially see her chest if they were changing on the same bench, and that’s when people started calling her “disgusting.”

Here’s the part that makes it messy: in a space where everyone’s already half-dressed, was her quick shirt adjustment actually wrong, or just misunderstood?

Original Post

I (15f) was in the changing rooms last week after gym class. It was quite a warm day and I’m pretty flat-chested, so I hadn’t worn a bra (they often do more harm than good for me due to sensory issues).

I was facing the wall, meaning there was a small gap in which someone could see my chest, if they were changing on the same bench. I lifted up my gym shirt for a moment before putting my school shirt back on, and many people were saying I was being disgusting.

I can see that they may have been uncomfortable if they saw my chest, but i’ve been pondering this for a while because I was in the changing room, and facing the wall? I didn’t want to make anyone feel awkward.

AITA?

Changing room etiquette, especially for teens, can be quite complex.

Right when OP says she was facing the wall and only lifted her gym shirt for a second, the comments shift from “awkward” to “disgusting,” and that’s where the backlash starts to sting.

This incident highlights the critical intersection of body image, self-acceptance, and societal norms.

The incident involving the 15-year-old girl removing her shirt in a changing room underscores the critical need for open dialogue about personal boundaries in communal spaces. This situation highlights how misunderstandings can easily arise when norms around modesty are not clearly defined or communicated.

Encouraging discussions about appropriate behavior and personal comfort is essential. Role-playing scenarios can serve as a valuable tool for teens to articulate their feelings about personal space and boundaries. Such practices not only empower young individuals to express their needs but also teach them to consider the comfort of others in shared environments.

By engaging teens in conversations about social etiquette, families can instill a sense of responsibility and self-awareness that is crucial for navigating complex social interactions. This approach may help prevent similar situations in the future and promote a greater understanding of mutual respect in public spaces.

The sensory issue detail matters, because OP isn’t doing this for attention, she’s trying to avoid something that legitimately bothers her while she’s getting changed.

This is similar to the mom who spoils her friends’ kids, but gets roasted for requesting one adults-only night.

Research suggests that the emotional responses tied to body image issues can influence decision-making and social interactions.

Even though the post points out the “gap” in the bench setup, the people replying keep zeroing in on what others might have seen, not what OP was actually trying to prevent.

By the time the thread moves into boundary talk and misunderstanding, OP is left wondering if she should have added a bra anyway, even though she claims it causes her more harm than good.
