Teen Clashes With Mom After Refusing to Attend Uncle’s Halloween Wedding Due to Prior Plans With Boyfriend
The Halloween she’d been planning for months became her uncle’s wedding day
A teenager (OP) recently shared her frustration about a family wedding that’s threatening to derail Halloween plans she’s been making for months.
OP explained that Halloween has always been her favorite holiday for as long as she remembers.
She loves everything spooky, and this year feels significant because it might be her last chance to fully embrace the holiday as a kid before adulthood changes everything.
In preparation for the upcoming season, big news dropped from her uncle and his fiancée. They’re getting married on Halloween!
The news was quite surprising to OP, as she didn’t expect the date to be set on such an important date.
Consequently, she informed her mom that she didn’t want to attend and would rather spend Halloween with her boyfriend and friends, as planned.
OP’s mom wasn’t having it. Everyone else in the family was looking forward to the wedding.
In addition, she informed OP that the couple was planning to have candy for the kids at the wedding, so she could participate in that.
But OP made it clear that she’s not interested. She doesn’t want to spend her favorite day grabbing candy from a bowl with little kids when she could be out, actually celebrating Halloween the way she’d envisioned.
Her mom thinks she’s being selfish and immature for skipping a family wedding just to go trick-or-treating. She gets that it’s a big day for her uncle, but she feels like they chose an inconvenient date for a lot of people.

This situation highlights competing priorities that don’t have an easy resolution.
OP has been planning Halloween for months, and for her, it represents something meaningful; possibly her last year to celebrate it as a teenager before everything changes.
Her uncle chose that same date for his wedding, knowing it would conflict with a holiday his niece cares deeply about.
Do you think OP is being selfish, or does she valid reason to ditch the wedding and spend Halloween her own way?
