Thanksgiving Dilemma: Tradition vs. Creativity in Family Dinner
Debate on breaking tradition: Should I stick to the family's classic Thanksgiving dinner or incorporate new dishes to showcase my creativity?
Thanksgiving at this family’s house isn’t a meal, it’s a sacred schedule. The recipes have been passed down for generations, and everyone acts like the turkey needs a permission slip before it hits the oven.
This year, the pressure lands on a 29-year-old woman. Her parents, the usual hosts, handed her the cooking reins, and she’s been experimenting with different cuisines and styles. She tried to blend in new dishes with the classics, but once she shared her finalized menu, the reaction was immediate and intense, her family demanded the exact same lineup “as always.”
Now she’s stuck between staying loyal to tradition and cooking something that actually feels like her.

I (29F) come from a family that takes Thanksgiving very seriously. The traditional dinner recipes have been passed down for generations.
My parents always hosted the family dinner, but this year they asked me to take over the cooking. There's immense pressure to uphold the same standards.
For background, I've been exploring different cuisines and cooking styles lately. I suggested incorporating some new dishes alongside the classics this Thanksgiving.
My family was open to the idea at first, but when I shared my finalized menu plan, they were outraged. They insisted on the same menu as always, saying it's a tradition that shouldn't be broken.
I feel torn between honoring our family traditions and expressing my creativity through cooking. I love experimenting in the kitchen, but I don't want to disappoint my family on such an important occasion.
WIBTA if I stick to my new menu, or should I compromise and cook the traditional dishes for Thanksgiving?

It’s giving the same tension as in the case where a chef son tried changing Thanksgiving tradition and sparked a family rift.

Her parents stepping back and asking her to take over is the moment the whole Thanksgiving pressure cooker clicks on.
When she pitches new cuisine ideas alongside the classics, her family starts acting like the menu is a family heirloom, not a suggestion.
The outrage hits hardest after she shares the finalized menu plan, because apparently “creativity” is the one thing they cannot taste-test.
With Thanksgiving day looming, she has to decide whether to fight for her new lineup or quietly cook the traditional dishes her family insists on.

The family dinner did not end well, because her menu was treated like a betrayal instead of a Thanksgiving upgrade.
