Walmart’s $5.97 rotisserie chicken purse settles one fairness question immediately
Walmart launches a limited-edition rotisserie chicken purse on Sept. 1 for $5.97, the exact price of its real deli chicken.
A novelty handbag that costs the same as the food it imitates is almost designed to start a fairness debate. Walmart’s new rotisserie chicken purse does exactly that, but the company has already made its ruling on price.
The verdict is in the price tag
Starting September 1, Walmart shoppers can buy a limited-edition rotisserie Chicken Purse inspired by the retailer’s ready-to-eat deli birds. Sales begin at 8 a.m. ET through Walmart’s Spark Shop.
The money question is the easiest part to answer. The purse is priced at $5.97, which is exactly what Walmart charges for its actual rotisserie chicken. If the dispute is whether the novelty accessory costs more than the dinner that inspired it, Walmart’s answer is no.
The release is tied to National Chicken Month, and the company is also leaning into the oversized clutch trend for fall.

Who it affects and what shoppers get
Customers who want one will have two versions to choose from, Traditional and Lemon Pepper. Each carries the same $5.97 price.
Walmart is also selling miniature charms designed around the chicken and some of the sides or pairings people commonly associate with it.
The company says the deli item already has a large fan base. According to Walmart, about one in every 12 of its customers buys at least one rotisserie chicken each year. Walmart also says the product drew more than 15,000 social mentions over the last year.
Kim Tunick, Walmart’s group director of brand experiences and partnerships, said the volume of attention showed the chicken had become a fan favorite, and that the company wanted to turn that popularity into something customers could carry.

This is not the first chicken-to-fashion crossover
Walmart is not the first company to turn a grocery-store style rotisserie chicken into an accessory. Earlier this year, meat snack brand Chomps introduced a limited-edition bag called Le Chic’ken, designed to look like the plastic containers often used for store-bought rotisserie chickens.
That release arrived with Chomps’ expanded chicken stick line, and fans had a chance to win the purse during a National Rotisserie Chicken Day promotion.
For Walmart shoppers, the change takes effect September 1. The offer is limited edition, the channel is Walmart’s Spark Shop, and the headline detail is straightforward: the chicken purse costs the same as the chicken.
