The Disney Horror Movie That Got Pulled: What Changed in The Watcher in the Woods
Disney pulled The Watcher in the Woods after its 1980 debut, replaced the ending, and re-released it in 1981.
One of Disney’s strangest release stories belongs to one of its darkest films. The Watcher in the Woods opened in 1980, disappeared from theaters, then came back with a different ending that changed the movie’s biggest mystery.
Why Disney changed The Watcher in the Woods
The Watcher in the Woods was Disney leaning unusually far into horror. Set around an American family renting a gloomy house in England, the film centers on 17-year-old Jan as eerie events begin to connect to the disappearance of Mrs. Aylwood’s daughter 30 years earlier. Bette Davis played Mrs. Aylwood, with Lynn-Holly Johnson as Jan and Kyle Richards as Jan’s younger sister, Ellie.
The movie premiered in New York on April 16, 1980. Its original finale relied heavily on visual effects created with Disney’s Automated Camera Effects System, or ACES. Audiences did not respond well to that ending, and Disney pulled the film from theaters.
That was the big change. The studio shot a replacement ending and brought the movie back on Oct. 7, 1981. While John Hough directed the film, Vincent McEveety handled the new ending, and Disney’s official movie page lists both men as directors. To cover the gap in its release schedule, Disney put Mary Poppins back into theaters.

What ending got replaced, and what fans can watch now
The version that was removed went much further into science fiction than the one most viewers know. In Hough’s original cut, the Watcher was revealed as a flying, insect-like alien, and Jan was taken to a spaceship where the missing girl had been trapped. The released version simplified that idea. Instead of the creature reveal, the Watcher appears as a beam of light during a solar eclipse.
That swap matters most to Disney fans curious about the studio’s rare horror experiments, especially because The Watcher in the Woods remains hard to find. The 1980 original is not streaming in the U.S., including on Disney+, and it is not listed for digital rental or purchase. It is available on DVD and Blu-ray, and the alternate ending survives as a bonus feature on Disney’s DVD release.
The theatrical do-over did not turn the film into a hit. It largely missed at the box office, but it later developed a cult following. For Disney fans, that leaves The Watcher in the Woods as a standout oddity: a Bette Davis-led supernatural thriller that the studio literally changed after opening night.
