Passive Dad Gets Heat For Staying Neutral After Finding Out His New Wife Deleted His Daughter's Novel She Had Been Working On For Months
The villain in the novel is loosely based on the stepmom, and apparently, she didn't handle that very well.
A Redditor posted on Am I The A**hole asking for advice after his wife and daughter had a massive fight. OP (original poster) has been married to his wife, Hannah, for 2 years.
He says that his 16-year-old daughter and Hannah do not get along. In fact, they fight often and do not have a stepmom and stepdaughter relationship.
Morgan typically stays at her mom's place more often but currently lives with OP and Hannah for school. Their fight was all about Morgan's novel.
OP remembers Hannah telling him about it. She admitted to reading it without permission but praised Morgan's writing style and storytelling abilities, which OP thought was a positive thing for a change.
Recently, he went home only to witness Morgan and her mom yelling at Hannah. When OP asked what was happening, Morgan explained that Hannah had deleted her entire novel.
Hannah, on the other hand, said that Morgan had written an evil character based on her name and personality. She also said that Morgan used bad words to describe her.
Morgan defended her novel, saying that it was just a character and Hannah had no business snooping on her laptop in the first place.
Morgan's mom threatened Hannah, and she broke down, crying. OP watched all of this unfold before his eyes without uttering a word.
He stepped out for fresh air, and minutes later, Hannah began yelling at him.
She said OP acted cowardly and should have defended her during the argument. Next, Morgan and her mom also told OP that he should have done something after learning about what Hannah did.
OP was overwhelmed by everything and everyone yelling at him. Hannah checked into a hotel and refused to talk to him.
Morgan also went with her mom, crying and refusing to speak to OP. He says he felt like he had to stay out of this argument as he had been physically and mentally exhausted from his work.
On top of that, he feels tired from the endless arguments between Hannah and Morgan. It also doesn't help that they are making him choose sides but get mad when he refuses to do so.

Reddit's resounding answer is: YES, OP is most definitely the a**hole
AGuyAndHisCat
Instead of thinking it was a good thing that Hannah read Morgan's book without her approval, OP should have been horrified by the invasion of privacy

Here's a jingle inspired by Monty Python that captures OP's brand of bravery

OP knows exactly what was happening but chose to turn a blind eye

In the simplest terms, OP failed Morgan as a parent when he chose to be "neutral"
DragonCelica
By choosing not to take any sides, he has shown Morgan that he didn't value her

OP is in the hall of fame of sh*tty parenting

If you were Hannah and you read that your stepdaughter views you that way, wouldn't you reflect and wonder how you f*cked this up so badly that your actions had to be immortalized in a novel?

Morgan was probably writing that novel as an outlet, and now they've violated her privacy

Not everyone enjoys conflict, but when one party is clearly wrong, that has to be called out

Oh, Hannah definitely knows why she's the villain, and she's butthurt that Morgan has captured that so beautifully

No questions asked, but in OP's defense, he was tired, and he's the real victim here

Morgan should be OP's number one priority, but he just showed her she didn't even make the top 10

From a writer's perspective, Morgan could just be following one of the cardinal rules of writing

It wasn't even published, and this wouldn't even be an issue had they just respected Morgan's privacy

Here's a list of the wrongs they committed against Morgan:

The boat is sinking, and instead of saving Morgan, OP watched them all drown

OP could have easily been Morgan's hero in her eyes if he had just grown a backbone and stood up for his daughter. Instead, he couldn't be bothered to even care about the things she values because he's too tired.
If OP does not act quickly and mend things with Morgan, he can say goodbye to any opportunities of forming a father-daughter relationship with her. Let's hope Morgan can recover her lost novel so we can all read how horrible Hannah is.
