Viral TikTok By Server Highlights Differences Between Boomers And Gen-Z In Restaurant Table Etiquette

So very different

A TikTok video about restaurant table etiquette is taking the internet straight to the dining room, and it’s messy. A server named Kaitlyn Brande, who’s 18 and part of Gen Z, posted a clip that compares two tables from her shift, and the contrast is so stark people can’t stop screenshotting it.

In the video, she shows one table she says was used by five Boomers, even though she claims she’d already cleaned up “somewhat” while they were eating. Then she flips to the next table, where she says six Gen Zers sat, and everything looks neat and ready for her to wipe down fast.

It’s not just a debate about manners, it’s a look at how two groups can walk into the same restaurant and leave it totally differently.

Kaitlyn Brande, a server, ignited further debate by sharing a viral TikTok video featuring tables at the restaurant where she's employed. She is 18, so she is a part of Generation Z.

In her brief TikTok video, she displays a table she claims was used by five Boomers, mentioning that she had already cleaned up somewhat while they were dining. The table is in complete disarray:

Watch the video:

“I posted it because I thought it was ironic since older people always expect respect,” Brande says. “I’m not saying I expect people to ever stack their plates like that, because hey, I’m a person too. I want to go out and eat and not worry about the dishes or anything. All I’m saying is it was cool and helpful of the younger people, and I appreciated it.”

Kaitlyn Brande’s TikTok doesn’t just mention the “Boomers” table, she shows the full disarray she says she had to deal with after five older guests.

Also, this bill-splitting conflict with a friend who wanted an even split is a lot like the AITA case where someone refused an unequal dinner bill split.

Then the video cuts to the adjacent table with six Gen Zers, where the plates and items are arranged in a way that basically makes cleanup quicker for Kaitlyn.

The complication is that Kaitlyn admits she’s not demanding anyone stack their plates perfectly, she just thought the contrast was “ironic” given older people’s reputation for expecting respect.

And once you’re stuck picturing Kaitlyn wiping down that first chaotic table, the whole clip turns into a pretty uncomfortable question about what “politeness” looks like when the check is paid.

Anyone who has worked in the service industry, regardless of their age, understands the importance of being a considerate and thoughtful guest. Dining out doesn't grant the liberty to treat the surroundings and servers indiscriminately.

Perhaps none of those from the older generation had previous experience working in a restaurant. But isn't this the generation often associated with emphasizing politeness?

Nobody should leave a restaurant making the server’s job harder, especially when the next table is doing it right.
