AITA for Enforcing House Rules with In-Laws Despite Tension?

AITA for enforcing strict house rules that caused tension with my visiting in-laws? Find out how I prioritized safety over family harmony.

A 33-year-old mom is getting dragged for being “too uptight” after she tried to enforce her own house rules while her in-laws were staying over for a week. And honestly, the list of “small” rule breaks is not small when you’re dealing with a toddler and a dog.

Her in-laws, who she says are lovely people, were consistently lax: the front door stayed unlocked, the dog got table scraps even though that’s a no, and they rearranged the kitchen without asking. She reminded them politely, but they brushed it off like her rules were just personal quirks.

Then she found her toddler playing with a sharp knife that had been left out, and the whole situation snapped.

So I'm (33F), and my husband (35M) and I have always had strict house rules. We have a toddler and a dog, so keeping things organized and safe is crucial for us.

Recently, my in-laws came to stay with us for a week. They are lovely people but very lax about rules.

While they were here, they left the front door unlocked, fed our dog table scraps against our rules, and rearranged our kitchen without asking. I politely reminded them of our rules, but they dismissed it as me being too uptight.

One day, I found our toddler playing with a sharp knife they had left out, and it was the last straw. I firmly told them to respect our rules or leave.

They were upset, called me controlling, and left early. My husband is torn between us.

So, AITA? I feel like I had to prioritize my family's safety.

This gets messy in the same way as the AITA where someone asked their parents to move out after parenting interference.

OP reminded her in-laws about the front door, the dog’s no-table-scraps rule, and the kitchen boundaries, and they still acted like she was the problem.

The tension turned into a full-on argument the day OP caught their toddler with a sharp knife that in-laws had left out.

Her in-laws called her controlling, even though they had ignored multiple warnings about safety in the first place.

Now OP’s husband is stuck in the middle, torn between siding with his wife’s safety rules or appeasing his parents who left early.

Share your thoughts and experiences in the comments section.

The husband may be questioning who’s “controlling,” but that knife incident makes it hard to call OP the unreasonable one.
