Coworker Accused of Stealing Office Lunches

AITA for confronting a coworker about my stolen food at the office? Leading to tension and accusations, should I trust my gut or gather more evidence?

Someone in this office is treating the communal fridge like a personal pantry, and OP is not going to just shrug it off anymore. It started with homemade lunches disappearing week after week, the kind of small annoyance that turns into a full-on mystery when it keeps happening and nobody admits a thing.

OP, a 28M who brings in homemade meals to save money, watches their containers vanish. They even label the food discreetly, and it still disappears. Then there is Tom, a coworker in his 30s who sits near OP and has been acting suspicious lately, so OP confronts him, and Tom fires back with defensiveness and accusations of paranoia.

Now the break room is tense, and OP is stuck wondering if Tom is the culprit or if the whole office is just getting dragged into a pointless feud.

Original Post

So I'm (28M) working in a busy office, and we share a communal refrigerator in the break room. Lately, I've been bringing in my homemade lunches to save money and eat healthier.

But for the past couple of weeks, someone has been taking my food. At first, I thought I was misplacing it or forgetting that I had eaten it, but it kept happening.

I decided to label my containers discreetly to see if the issue persisted. Lo and behold, my labeled food still vanished.

Frustrated, I decided to confront my coworker, let's call him Tom (30sM), who sits near me and has been acting suspiciously lately. I asked him if he had been taking my lunches without permission.

Tom got defensive, denying any involvement and accusing me of being paranoid. Despite his denial, I can't shake the feeling that he's the one taking my food.

The office environment has become tense, with other coworkers caught in the middle. Am I overreacting by accusing Tom, or am I justified in suspecting him of stealing my food?

It’s the same office tension as the Redditor who caught their lunch thief and still faced an AITA backlash.

The weird part is OP’s food keeps disappearing even after they switch to discreet labels, so it stops feeling like “oops” and starts feeling like a pattern.

That’s when OP goes for the direct route and confronts Tom, asking straight up if he’s been taking lunches.

Tom immediately flips it on OP, calling him paranoid, while the office tension spreads because other coworkers are suddenly stuck in the middle.

And with OP’s labeled containers still vanishing, everyone has to decide whether Tom’s denial is convincing or just convenient.

What do you think about this situation? Let us know in the comments.

Nobody wants their lunch to become office drama, but Tom may have just turned the break room into a crime scene.
