Coworker Caught Red-Handed Stealing Lunch: AITA for Reporting Them?
"Office lunch thief gets fiery surprise - AITA for catching coworker red-handed? Reddit's divided on spicy revenge vs. lunch theft."
A 27-year-old office worker thought she had a simple lunch problem, until it turned into a full-blown workplace mess. After her food kept disappearing from the communal fridge, she decided to catch the thief in a very memorable way.
The Reddit post centers on Steve, a coworker who allegedly kept taking her lunch even after she confronted him. When the thefts continued, she bought a mini-fridge, then later set a spicy trap with ghost peppers that sent the break room into chaos and brought HR into the picture.
Now the internet is split on whether she went too far or finally had enough. Here's the full story.
So I'm (27F) working at this office for about a year now. It's a decent place, and I get along with most of my coworkers.
However, there's this one person, let's call them Steve, who keeps stealing my lunch from the fridge. At first, I thought it was a mistake, but it kept happening.
I confronted Steve politely, saying that I noticed my food missing and asked if they mistakenly took it. They denied it, of course.
This lunch theft continued, and it started to really annoy me. I decided to take action.
I bought a mini-fridge for my desk and stopped using the communal fridge. Lo and behold, my lunches were no longer disappearing.
I was livid that I had to go to such lengths because of Steve's actions. One day, I had enough.
I emptied out my lunch bag and filled it with some spicy leftovers laced with a hefty dose of ghost peppers. I put it in the fridge, knowing Steve would take the bait.
Later that day, I heard screams from the break room. Steve had taken the spicy lunch and was in distress, rushing to grab water.
It was a scene. Steve figured out it was me and complained to HR about the spicy lunch trap.
Now HR is involved, and they're questioning us both. I feel somewhat guilty for resorting to such extreme measures, but I also feel vindicated for catching the lunch thief red-handed.
So, Reddit, AITA for ratting out a coworker for repeatedly stealing my lunch at the office? Really need outside perspective.
