Drunk Mother Abandons Her Kid In The Middle Of The Night To Party And Loses Custody After The Police Tried To Look For Her The Next Morning
She is blaming her friend, who took care of her baby the whole night, for calling the police.
Lucy thought a late-night drink was harmless, but the night quickly turned into a mess no one at that house could ignore. OP and her partner had already been drinking at home when a friend invited them over, only for the evening to spiral once they realized a baby was in the house.
What started as a casual hangout became a test of judgment, responsibility, and basic common sense.
By morning, the situation had gone from awkward to serious, and Lucy’s choices were catching up with her fast. Read on.
It is now 7 AM, Lucy is still not home and her baby has not stopped crying since waking up.
OP had no choice but to call the police, and when they arrived, they also tried calling Lucy, but even they couldn't get through. They managed to contact the father of the child through Facebook and relay what happened.
Around 8:30 AM, OP received a message from Lucy asking, "Where is my baby?" OP explained what happened and kept asking Lucy where she was, but her only answer was to ask where her daughter was.
The authorities asked for OP's account of the events leading up to that morning. The father of the baby has taken Lucy to court.
Six months later, Lucy hasn't seen her baby, and OP receives messages from random numbers asking her if she's happy for causing everything. OP blocked her on everything, but Lucy keeps finding ways to message OP, who is now starting to doubt her decision.
AlarmingDifficulty78OP's full account of the event can be read below:

No matter how you flip the story, Lucy lost custody of her child because of Lucy.

If OP snaps, she could reply to Lucy with this deserved response.
Prudent_Camera_7614
She showed her concern for her daughter too late.
HarnessMeDesignsOUB
OP became free childcare while Lucy messed around somewhere.
deathandcoffee
This kind of absence-and-questions tension is similar to the AITA debate over confronting a friend who skipped a surprise baby shower.
This reeks of previous reports, and this wouldn't have happened with just one night of drinking.

How indeed?
Primary-Criticism929
According to OP, she's read enough of Lucy's messages to be convinced it's her fault.
AlarmingDifficulty78
If the parent is irresponsible, then they forfeit their right to be a parent.
kindlynope
The guilt is understandable given their decade-long friendship, but again, this is not OP's fault.
AlarmingDifficulty78
It could have been worse if OP hadn't done anything to protect the child.
merrycat
The drunk mother's feelings are not above the welfare of her child.
blackley_jones
There's more to the story than what Lucy is letting on.

Lucy is doing everything in her power to make herself the victim in this story.
AlarmingDifficulty78
Wouldn't want to jump to any conclusions, but this is definitely suspect behavior.

The saddest part of the story and the true victim is Lucy's kid.
kha-ci
Apparently, Lucy's family is also harassing OP.
AlarmingDifficulty78
OP replied that she did block the people telling her she's an a**hole.

The straw that ultimately broke the camel's back.

If OP hadn't been there, who knows what could have happened to her baby?
FoolMe1nceShameOnU
OP's instinct to stop drinking immediately after finding out that a baby was inside the house was correct. She elaborated that she felt at least one of them should be sober in case of an emergency, and she was right.
It was an emergency created by the baby's own mother, Lucy. This is not at all OP's fault; she's the reason why the baby is in the custody of a parent who truly cares for her and not the drunk mother who's more concerned about placing blame than caring for her own kid.
For another “who pays” blowup, read about the friend who trashed a hotel room and refused to split the bill.
