People Were Divided About The Studio Ghibli Trailer For Their First-Ever 3D CGI Movie, "Earwig And The Witch"

Many of the studio’s movies create their unique atmosphere through animation, but with CGI, things are different.

Studio Ghibli fans had plenty to talk about when the trailer for Earwig and the Witch arrived, because this time the studio was doing something it had never done before. Instead of the hand-drawn look that made its classics so beloved, the film leaned into 3D CGI, and that alone was enough to split opinions fast.

The movie, directed by Goro Miyazaki, follows a self-centered witch in the British countryside who adopts an orphan, and it marks Studio Ghibli's first full CGI project. That shift made the trailer feel exciting to some viewers and jarring to others, especially with Hayao Miyazaki's legacy hanging over every frame. The debate was already underway.

Goro is not a newcomer to the animation industry, but he still has a lot of ground to cover. There are many demands placed on his shoulders.

This complicates the bond between Goro and his father. For instance, Goro had previously vowed to avoid a career in the animation industry, but as luck would have it, he ended up there.

Some fans of Ghibli were quite critical of the movie and its use of CGI.

In a way, I believe that critics would be present no matter what course Goro chose to take with Earwig and the Witch because he is not a carbon copy of his father and is pursuing his own path. However, there were also supporters of the movie.

Even if you’re not a huge fan of CGI, you ought to be excited about Earwig and the Witch because the trailer just screams Studio Ghibli. Are you a fan of the trailer? Fantastic!

Have you watched the movie yet? Do not fret. Hayao, Goro’s father, is currently working on the 2D film, How Do You Live, which will most likely be released in a few years.
