Family Feud: Refusing to Share Fathers Violin - AITA?
AITA for refusing to share my father's cherished violin with my cousin who wants to sell it for quick cash? Family tensions rise as sentimental value clashes with financial need.
A 28-year-old man refused to sell his late father’s old violin, and somehow that turned into a full-blown family feud. This wasn’t just “a nice instrument,” it was the same violin his dad used to play for him as a kid, the kind of object that carries memories you cannot replace with cash.
Then his cousin, 32, swooped in with a too-good-to-be-true offer, claiming she could flip it for a quick profit. When he said no, she kept pushing, then hit him with the guilt-trip about not helping “family in need,” which sparked a heated argument and split the extended family right down the middle.
Now everyone is picking sides, and the violin is the battlefield.

So I'm (28M) and have this beautiful old violin that belonged to my father. It's not just any violin - it holds sentimental value as my father used to play it for me when I was a kid.
Recently, my cousin (32F) found out about this violin and offered to buy it off me at a price far below its actual value because she thinks she can sell it for a quick buck. I was taken aback by her request as I hold this violin dear to my heart.
I politely declined, explaining the emotional connection I have with it. However, my cousin didn't take no for an answer and persisted, even going as far as to guilt-trip me about not helping family in need.
This led to a heated argument between us, where she accused me of being selfish and not considering her financial struggles. Now, our extended family is divided - some think I should share the violin with her, while others support my decision to keep it.
I honestly don't know if I'm wrong here. So AITA?

This is similar to the OP who tried splitting an antique jewelry collection with a sister demanding specific pieces.

The moment the cousin offered a bargain price for the violin, it stopped being a “deal” and started feeling like a money grab.

When OP explained it was tied to his father’s memories, the cousin still wouldn’t drop it and escalated into guilt-tripping.

That argument turned into a family-wide debate, with some relatives pushing OP to share the violin and others backing his refusal.

At the center of it all is the same question, keep the violin that belonged to his dad, or sell it to help his cousin financially.

The family dinner might be over, but the violin drama is still playing on.
