Family Loyalty vs. Betrayal: Handling Cousins Hurtful Secret About Best Friend
Discover if OP would be justified in excluding a cousin from family events after uncovering a betrayal involving their best friend in this complex moral dilemma on Reddit.
A 29-year-old woman is stuck choosing between family loyalty and the best friend who has been by her side since childhood. For her, it is not some dramatic movie plot, it is a real-life betrayal that happened at the worst possible time.
Her cousin, Lily, has always been close enough to share everything, then suddenly the social circle started getting malicious rumors about her best friend, and the damage was real. When she confronted Lily, it went from denial to a full admission, with Lily blaming jealousy over the bond between her and the best friend.
Now the family gatherings are on the line, and the question is whether Lily gets a second chance after targeting someone who never deserved it.

So I'm (29F) and have always been super close to my cousin, let's call her Lily (27F). We practically grew up together and shared everything.
My best friend (30F) has been a huge part of my life since childhood, and we've always had each other's backs. Recently, I discovered that Lily was spreading malicious rumors about my best friend to our social circle.
These rumors were not only hurtful but also damaging to my friend's reputation. When I confronted Lily about it, she denied everything at first but eventually admitted to it.
I was shocked and hurt beyond words. Lily apologized profusely and begged me not to cut her out of our family gatherings.
She attributed her actions to feeling jealous of the bond I share with my best friend. Now, I'm torn between loyalty to my family and loyalty to my best friend.
It's a tough spot to be in because I value both relationships immensely. I can't help but feel betrayed by Lily's actions, but I also understand her struggles with jealousy.
So, WIBTA for not inviting Lily to our family gatherings moving forward, or should I try to reconcile things for the sake of family unity and forgiveness? I honestly don't know how to navigate this situation.

It’s like the woman who had to decide whether to limit a competitive friend’s access to her family event.

The moment Lily’s rumors hit the friend’s reputation, the cousin bond OP thought was unbreakable suddenly felt fake.
After OP confronted Lily and got that awkward switch from denial to admission, the apologies sounded less like repair and more like damage control.
Lily’s jealousy explanation might explain her feelings, but it does not erase what she did to OP’s best friend in the social circle.
So when OP considers uninviting Lily from future family gatherings, it turns every holiday into a test of what loyalty really means.
What do you think about this situation? Let us know in the comments.
If Lily can’t stop aiming rumors at OP’s best friend, OP might need to protect the one relationship that has never betrayed her.
