Family Reunion Drama: Confronting Uncles Prank - AITA?

AITA for calling out my uncle's inappropriate behavior at a family reunion? Family divided after I confronted him about upsetting my cousin.

A 28-year-old woman refused to laugh off her uncle’s “prank” at a beach house family reunion, and now the whole group is split down the middle. It was supposed to be a weekend of bonding, sun, and bonfire stories, but one loud, boisterous uncle decided the best entertainment was making someone else’s night go sideways.

Here’s the messy part: during the bonfire, Uncle Steve (45M) put on a whole show by pretending to throw cousin Sophie’s phone into the ocean. Everyone laughed, Sophie did not, and she was visibly upset and close to tears. The next day OP confronted Steve, told him it was inappropriate, and asked for an apology. He doubled down, called OP too serious, refused to apologize, and somehow that turned into a full-on family side-taking situation.

Now OP has to deal with the fallout and the question everyone is whispering: was she wrong to call it out?

Original Post

I (28F) recently attended our annual family reunion at a rented beach house. Family members from all over traveled to join for a weekend of bonding and fun.

Quick context: my uncle Steve (45M) has always been the loud, boisterous type. He tends to dominate conversations and loves practical jokes.

During one evening by the bonfire, Uncle Steve decided it would be hilarious to prank my cousin Sophie (26F) by pretending to throw her phone into the ocean. He made a big show of it, everyone laughed, but Sophie didn't find it funny at all.

She was upset and on the verge of tears. I saw this, and it made me uncomfortable.

The next day, I approached Uncle Steve and told him that his behavior was inappropriate, and he had upset Sophie. I suggested he apologize to her.

Steve got defensive, accusing me of being too serious and not understanding humor. He refused to apologize, saying it was just a harmless joke.

This led to tension in the family, with people taking sides. Some said Uncle Steve was just being his usual self, while others agreed that he crossed a line.

Now, our family is divided, and I'm wondering if I should've stayed quiet to keep the peace. So AITA?

OP watched Sophie’s face at the bonfire, and that reaction is what made her step in instead of letting Uncle Steve run the show.

The “harmless joke” talk started the moment OP told Steve to apologize, and that is when the defensiveness kicked in.

Once Steve refused, the family reunion stopped feeling like bonding and started feeling like teams formed around Steve versus OP.

Now that everyone has picked a side over Sophie’s phone prank, OP is stuck wondering if she should have swallowed it for peace.
