Friend Demands My Meal Prep Secrets for Her Business: AITA?

AITA for refusing to share my meal prep secrets with my best friend who launched a business inspired by me, leading to tension and threats of rivalry?

A 28-year-old man built his meal prep routine like it was a personal art project, then watched his best friend turn it into a business plan. At first, it sounded sweet, Emily tried a few meals, loved them, and asked to learn. He even helped her get started, because they were best friends and the vibe was friendly.

But once Emily’s meal prep business took off, the tone shifted fast. She started pressuring him to hand over his “secret” recipes and techniques so she could add them to her menu and keep the popularity rolling. When he wouldn’t comply, she accused him of being selfish, threatened a menu rivalry, and basically dangled public dish comparisons like a weapon.

Now he’s stuck wondering if he’s being unreasonable, or if she’s trying to cash in on his hard work.

Original Post

I (28M) have always been passionate about meal prepping. It's a hobby that helps me stay organized and eat healthy throughout the week.

About a year ago, my best friend Emily (26F) started showing interest in meal prep after trying some of the meals I made. She loved them and wanted to start her own meal prep business.

I was supportive and helped her with tips and ideas initially, but I wasn't prepared for what happened next. Emily launched her meal prep business and it became immensely popular in our area.

People raved about her meals, and she credited me for inspiring her. However, as her business grew, Emily started pressuring me to share my secret recipes and techniques with her.

She wanted to incorporate them into her menu to attract more customers. I felt uncomfortable with this request because I had spent years perfecting my recipes and techniques, and I had always viewed them as my own personal creations.

Fast forward to last week, Emily called me and demanded that I hand over my meal prep secrets to her, claiming that she deserved them since I had inspired her business. I tried to explain that I wasn't comfortable sharing everything with her, but she got upset and accused me of being selfish and hindering her success.

She even threatened to start a menu rivalry and publicly compare her dishes to mine if I didn't comply. Now, I'm torn.

On one hand, I want to support Emily's success, but on the other hand, I feel like my creativity and hard work are at stake. I want to maintain the uniqueness of my meal preps and not simply give them away.

So, Reddit, AITA for refusing to share my meal prep secrets with my best friend after she started a business inspired by me?

Emily went from loving his meals to calling him on the phone to demand his “secret recipes” like they were owed to her.

The moment her business got immensely popular, her compliments turned into pressure, and suddenly his personal creations were “menu material.”

When he refused, Emily escalated from asking nicely to threatening a menu rivalry and publicly comparing her dishes to his.

The real mess is that he wants to support her success, but he also wants to keep his techniques unique instead of giving them away for free.
