Friends Tough Time: Should I Allow Her to Bring Iguana on Beach Trip?

"Debating whether to allow friend's emotional support iguana on beach trip sparks AITA dilemma - pet comfort vs. trip logistics."

A 28-year-old woman planned a beach escape with her best friend, and she thought it would be the kind of trip that fixes everything for a little while. Then her friend dropped the request that changed the vibe completely: she wants to bring her pet iguana along.

It’s not like this friend is doing it for fun. She’s been having a rough stretch, lost her job, went through a messy breakup, and the iguana is her comfort object in animal form. But the beach trip comes with rules, the accommodation does not allow pets, and OP is already picturing the real-world chaos of keeping an iguana calm, safe, and cared for in a hot, public setting.

Now OP has to decide if saying “no” makes her a villain, or just the person trying to keep the trip from turning into a logistical nightmare.

So I'm a 28F who's been planning this beach trip with my friend (27F). We've been friends since forever, but lately, I've noticed she's been going through a tough time.

She lost her job, had a messy breakup, and has been feeling down. She recently got an iguana as a pet, which she's really attached to because it gives her comfort.

However, she now wants to bring the iguana on our beach trip. I'm not comfortable with this idea because our accommodation doesn't allow pets, and I'm worried about the logistics of caring for the iguana in a beach environment.

I know she's been struggling, but I don't want to deal with the complications of having a pet on our trip. WIBTA for refusing to let her bring her iguana even though I know she relies on it for support, especially during this tough time?

It also reminds me of the debate in the girls trip where a friend wanted to bring a ferret.

OP’s friend is already stressed from losing her job and the breakup, so the iguana is basically her emotional lifeline during the planning phase.

But the moment the iguana becomes “bring it to the beach,” the no-pets rule at their accommodation turns a coping plan into a problem.

OP isn’t worried about feelings, she’s worried about the day-to-day reality of caring for an iguana in sand, heat, and constant movement.

And that’s where the friendship gets tested, because OP has to refuse something that her friend believes is helping her survive this tough time.

She might be the bad guy in her friend’s head, but she’s also the one trying to stop the trip from falling apart.
