Redditor Tells Step-Sister She Deserves the Karma She Got After Insulting Her Fiancé's Appearance
"This sub needs a Justified A**hole vote."
There's a reason why the saying 'don't judge a book by its cover' is commonly used. It's because we all present our own faces, but no one would ever truly know what you're going through unless you tell them your story or they somehow find out.
Unfortunately, some people disregard that saying and instantly assume the worst about a person, especially if they don't fit their standards. They might be projecting their own insecurities onto others, but it wouldn't matter if they still hurt the person they are judging.
People who don't have any visible flaws, even good-looking individuals, are often judged more harshly than those with obvious disabilities or disfigurements. You might not know how greatly this affects their day-to-day lives, and it would be better to treat them with the same kindness you would want others to show you.
OP's partner in this subreddit post suffers from a disfigurement he sustained due to an accident. He has faced his own lows when dealing with self-esteem, but OP has always viewed him as handsome.
OP's stepmother and step-sister, however, do not share the same sentiment. Not only do they criticize him when he's not present, but they also made the mistake of making ridiculous comments during a dinner where both OP and he were present.
Naturally, OP wouldn't let the comments go and saw red. Then something happened to the step-sister that OP believes equates to karma.
Here's how this post started
UserDoesNotExist404OP started by introducing all the key people involved in the problem
UserDoesNotExist404OP has always encouraged her fiancé, reassuring him that she finds him handsome despite his insecurities
UserDoesNotExist404
OP's stepmother and step-sister are both judgmental about people's looks and would go as far as berating strangers. When T proposed to OP, their dad invited them for dinner, so OP informed T about her dad's family's behavior beforehand.
UserDoesNotExist404
The insults started at one point during dinner, and OP's fiancé was obviously becoming uncomfortable with the blatant shaming.
UserDoesNotExist404
While T remained calm, OP couldn't, and she had to be dragged outside in case she might hurt her mother and sister. OP's dad tried to apologize profusely, and she didn't hold back in telling him how wrong they were.
UserDoesNotExist404
It was as if a switch had been flipped, and suddenly the dad was asking OP to apologize to his family instead for 'hurting' them. OP refused, and then two weeks later, she received a phone call from her dad explaining the car accident her step-sister was involved in.
UserDoesNotExist404
When OP was at their house to retrieve some items, she overheard V talking about how bad she felt because of the laceration she sustained from the accident. OP then made this comment:
UserDoesNotExist404
OP threw back the insult they had made during the disastrous dinner, causing a meltdown from them.
UserDoesNotExist404
Although the post is a bit complex, the majority of the comments voted OP as NTA.

However, OP does not see anything redeeming about the sister and the mom.
UserDoesNotExist404
There is also the obvious trait that they can only judge but become hostile when they are the ones being judged.
Livvylove
They project any insecurities they have onto other people instead of recognizing how to overcome them.

V might feel like she has the upper hand every time she puts someone down, even though there's no competition whatsoever.

Many points were made by a Redditor based on OP's statements.
GoodGirlsGrace
They pointed out the audacity of saying the things they said and suggested that it would be better for OP to avoid being around them.
GoodGirlsGrace
It's shallow for someone to insult another's appearance, but it's a level of cruelty to make fun of someone's disability.
GoodGirlsGrace
Respect begets respect.

And when that's gone, what then?

If they only see the surface, they wouldn't know what truly matters.

They might have been sailing through life thinking that trait is foolproof until it comes back to bite them.

If they already know they're pretty, why not work on something else?

OP could benefit more from looking forward than from getting tangled in the mess.
Ok-Beginning-5922
They might not see the lesson and may not change.

End of comment.

OP can take this route if she doesn't want a potential problem at her wedding.

They seem to live in an ironic bubble.

Redditors also commented on the dad.

They pointed out his back-and-forth behavior between the two sides and ultimately choosing his new family's side.

There are many cruel things in the world, and it would be unfortunate to add to that growing list. The step-sister and stepmother crossing the line with their insults and being surprised by OP's reaction showed how little they pay attention to others' feelings.
Do you think OP was wrong for kicking the sister when she was already down? Will there be a chance for the step-family to change their ways?
