Deadbeat FIL In Hot Soup As Man Refuses To Give Him Money Until Demands Are Met
"He said I was a bad male model for my son"
Some people don’t recognize a favor, and this family’s drama proves it. It started with OP’s father in law showing up with a crisis and a demand, and OP basically said, “No money until you meet the conditions.”
Here’s the mess: the older brother handled the funeral but is out of state and not stepping back in, the brother-in-laws had secretly been helping for a while but ran out of options, and now OP’s FIL has to find income again, either disability checks or a job. Meanwhile, OP’s wife is pitying him, convinced he’s mentally ill and mentally challenged, and OP is done pretending that explains everything.
The hot part is the part OP admits he posted because he’s past caring if his FIL “survives” the consequences.
The OP writes...
RedditThe older brother took care of the funeral but lives in another state and has no interest in helping him

OP’s FIL expects a handout, but OP isn’t buying it after seeing he had no real income plan and still refused to change.
The pressure ramps up when the brother-in-laws, who were quietly helping, can’t keep covering his bills.
OP has offered the following explanation for why they think they might be the AH:
- I refused to give or lend my father in law money and he has no source of income and may lose his home. On the other hand, he doesn't do anything, was an absent father, is irresponsible and refuses to change.

That’s when OP’s wife starts framing FIL as mentally challenged, even as OP points out he managed to work and have a family in the past.
This is also like a stoned waiter dining incident that left diners arguing about whether tipping is required.
The OP left this somewhere in the comments...
My wife stated he might even be intellectually unable to understand how to get that information I requested. I am not sure. While he does appear to be on the brink of insanity and mentally challenged to a degree, he DID manage to get a job and a family for quite a long time. I am provided with very little information about that part of his life.

And once OP reveals he doesn’t care if his father in law starves, the whole “he needs help” argument collapses at the family dinner table.
OP says his FIL is afraid of him because he knows he doesn't take nonsense from him. Their relationship was cordial and respectful at first, but it went sour after OP learned more about who he is.
The OP also went ahead to reveal that he posted his story because he really does not care if the FIL starves, because he has had enough of this. The OP was declared not the AH, and that's a wrap.
Nobody wants to keep funding someone else’s free ride, especially when the demands keep coming.
