You Can Learn A Lot About People While Working In A Library, And This Woman Shared The Most Interesting Stuff In A Viral Thread

Libraries are such wonderful places with great people.

Libraries possess a mystical quality that's hard to describe or explain. Perhaps it's the silence, or maybe it's the vast amount of knowledge contained within the books.

We could spend hours and days debating this, but the truth is that each of us experiences libraries differently. Mel (@grumpwitch), a librarian from Scotland, has decided to share some insights she has gained while working in the library, bringing the whole world closer to us.

She discusses professional secrets as well as observations about people. Her posts are both enlightening and concerning. “I’ve had a lot of jobs over the years, but I became quite unwell about five years ago and had to leave my product design engineering role and course,” Mel says.

“I was devastated, but I knew that recovery would take time. I’ve always been a bookworm, so I started looking for part-time jobs in libraries and other environments while I recovered. I love it so much that I hope to keep working in libraries permanently.

I was waiting for the kettle to boil while making dinner one evening, and I’d been chatting with my colleague about the strange and random things we’d learned in this job,” she said.

“So I started tweeting them out without any thought about order or structure, just as they came to my mind. I figured a few of my fellow library assistants would relate. If I’d known how big it would become, I’d have proofread them first!”

It is lovely to see how passionate and dedicated librarians are about their work. The important thing is to keep our libraries open.

We shouldn’t let them close due to a lack of funding. So, even if you don’t have time to read a book, borrow one and return it in a timely manner.

But please, find time to read it.
