TikToker Criticizes The Landlord In A Funny Video For Increasing Rent Despite The Apartment Needing Repairs

Unless rent control is in effect, the only option to challenge a rent increase is often to claim that the landlord discriminated against you or raised the rent as punishment for exercising a legitimate right. Your landlord may increase the rent if you have a lease, but that is typically at the end of the lease term. After that, they might present you with a new lease that has different conditions, including a higher rent. However, if the original contract stipulates this possibility or if you consent, the landlord may increase the rent before the end of the rental period. Conversely, if your lease is month-to-month, the landlord must give you written notice before raising the rent. Dave Ramsey, a well-known financial educator, emphasizes the importance of understanding your lease terms to avoid unexpected increases.
