Neighbor Loses Dog While Dog-Sitting: AITA for Refusing to Pay?
AITA for refusing to pay my neighbor after they lost my dog while watching him? The incident raises questions about trust and accountability.
A 28-year-old woman refused to pay her neighbor after a dog-sitting job went sideways, and it’s turning into a full-on neighborhood feud. Her pug, Max, didn’t just “get loose,” he vanished for half a day while Sarah was watching him.
Sarah had watched Max before, so the OP trusted her with a couple days of care during a family emergency. But when OP got home, Max was missing, and Sarah admitted she left the gate open by mistake. A stranger eventually found the pug wandering the streets and brought him back, uninjured but clearly shaken up.
Now Sarah wants payment for her time, and OP is stuck wondering if “sorry” is supposed to cover the lost-pet part too.

So I'm (28F) an avid dog lover, and I have a cute little pug named Max. He's my absolute joy and I entrust my neighbor, Sarah, to watch him occasionally when I'm out of town.
Sarah has always been responsible with Max in the past, so I felt comfortable leaving him in her care. Last weekend, I had to travel for a family emergency and asked Sarah to watch Max for a couple of days.
When I returned, I discovered that Max had escaped from Sarah's backyard while she was taking care of him. She was distraught and admitted that she left the gate open by mistake.
Max was missing for half a day before a kind stranger found him wandering the streets and returned him to me. Fortunately, he wasn't injured, but I was understandably upset.
Sarah immediately apologized and offered to pay for any expenses related to the incident, including a new lock for her gate. However, I feel like I can't trust her to watch Max anymore, especially after such a frightening experience.
Now, Sarah is asking for payment for her time spent watching Max even though he went missing under her supervision. I am hesitant to pay her considering the circumstances, but she insists that I owe her for the service she provided.
So, AITA?
Trust and Accountability in Pet Care
trust is foundational in any relationship, including those between pet owners and sitters.
In this case, a lack of clarity around responsibilities may have contributed to the unfortunate loss of Max.

Sarah was trusted with Max before, so OP thought this would be a routine favor, not a gate-left-open disaster.
Establishing a written contract outlining duties and liabilities can help both parties understand their responsibilities and potential consequences.

The half-day search and the stranger who returned Max are what make OP’s anger feel completely justified.
This is similar to the negligent cousin who caused a pet vet visit, then asked for payment.
The recent incident involving a lost pug while dog-sitting highlights the critical need for thorough preparation and communication in pet care. The Reddit user's experience with her neighbor Sarah serves as a stark reminder of the responsibilities that come with pet-sitting. It is essential for pet owners to provide sitters with comprehensive information about their pets' habits and any quirks that could lead to unexpected situations.
Moreover, the importance of familiarizing oneself with the pet's environment cannot be overstated. In this case, understanding potential escape routes and the layout of the home could have significantly mitigated the risk of Max going missing. By taking these proactive steps, both pet owners and sitters can foster a safer and more secure environment for beloved animals, ultimately preventing such distressing events from occurring.

Sarah apologized and offered to pay expenses like a new lock, but she’s now asking OP to pay her for sitting anyway.
By maintaining a level-headed approach, individuals can communicate more effectively and work collaboratively to resolve issues—ultimately strengthening trust and accountability in the relationship.

When OP says she can’t trust Sarah to watch Max anymore, Sarah’s “you still owe me” stance is where the argument really spikes.
