Neighbor Upset After I Decline to Share Family Chili Recipe: AITA?
"Seeking judgment on my refusal to share my secret chili recipe with persistent new neighbor - AITA for valuing family traditions?"
A 28-year-old woman refused to share her family’s legendary chili recipe, and her new neighbor took it personally enough to start a whole neighborhood gossip campaign.
It began with the guy next door, late 30s to 40s, who kept dropping hints after learning about her “passed down for generations” chili. He talked about how his favorite thing is chili, joked about sneaking a taste while it was cooking, then actually showed up at her door with a container asking for “a small portion” like it was no big deal. She said no, because the recipe is a family tradition and she’s not handing out the secret spice blend to the neighborhood.
Then she overheard him telling someone else she’s being selfish, and now she’s stuck wondering if she crossed some unspoken chili-sharing line.

I (28F) take great pride in my cooking skills, especially my famous chili recipe that's been passed down for generations in my family. Recently, a new neighbor (30s/40sM) moved in next door and upon finding out about my renowned chili, he's been dropping hints about wanting to try it.
Initially, I politely declined his requests, explaining that it's a cherished family secret recipe. For background, I've always been cautious about sharing this recipe outside of family gatherings or special occasions.
It's not just any chili; it has a unique blend of spices and ingredients that set it apart. However, my neighbor has been persistent, mentioning how much he loves chili and how he's sure mine would be the best he's ever tasted.
The other day, he even joked about sneaking a taste when I have it cooking. This made me uncomfortable, as I value the privacy of my recipes and the tradition behind them.
Last night, he knocked on my door with a container in hand, asking if I could share a small portion of my chili with him. I hesitated, not wanting to offend him, but ultimately stood my ground and declined, reiterating that it's a family recipe that I prefer to keep within the family.
He seemed a bit let down but didn't push it further. However, today, I overheard him chatting with another neighbor about how I'm being unreasonable and selfish for not sharing a simple recipe.
This has left me feeling conflicted - on one hand, I want to maintain the tradition and significance of our family recipes, but on the other, I don't want to come off as rude or unneighborly. So, Reddit, based on this situation, AITA for refusing to share my famous chili recipe with my new neighbor despite their persistent requests?

This is similar to the AITA debate over a secret family chili recipe and the sibling’s partner.

That first polite decline should have been the end of it, but the neighbor kept pushing about his “best chili ever” fantasies.

When he knocked last night with a container in hand, asking for a small portion, that’s when her discomfort turned into full-on boundary mode.

The next day, she overheard him calling her unreasonable and selfish, which made the whole situation feel less neighborly and more petty.

Now every time he brings up her chili, she’s wondering if her family secret is being treated like a public service announcement.

He asked for her family secret, got a no, and still managed to make it everyone else’s problem.
Wait until you see why she refused to share her family chili at a potluck. AITA for keeping the secret chili recipe?
