Neighbors Renovation Noise Disrupts Partners Meeting: AITA for Asking Them to Stop?

AITA for asking my neighbor to halt loud construction during my partner's important meeting? The clash of rights vs. courtesy sparks a tense situation.

Some apartment building problems are small, like a shared mailbox being annoying. This one is loud, constant, and somehow timed perfectly for chaos, right when a partner needs to be on a call.

A 30-year-old guy, living next to a 50-something woman who started renovations, says the drilling and hammering have been going since early morning until late at night for two full weeks. It’s wrecking his work-from-home setup and, even worse, disrupting his partner’s important online meetings.

He tried to handle it politely by knocking on the door and asking for adjusted timing, and that is when the neighbor decided he was the problem.

Original Post

I (30M) live in an apartment building next to a new neighbor (50sF) who has been doing some major renovation work for the past two weeks. The noise has been unbearable, with constant drilling and hammering starting early in the morning till late in the evening.

At first, I tried to bear with it, assuming it was a one-time thing, but it has dragged on, disrupting my work-from-home setup and my partner's (28F) important online meetings. After hearing my partner struggling to communicate due to the noise intrusion, I felt I had to address the situation.

So, I went next door, knocked on the door, and politely asked if they could adjust the timing of the loud work to not coincide with my partner's meetings. I explained the impact it was having on our ability to work effectively.

However, my neighbor seemed offended, claiming they had every right to renovate their own place whenever they pleased. They also insinuated that we were being overly sensitive.

I tried to reason with them, suggesting maybe they could schedule the noisier work for specific times or days, but they bluntly refused. I don't want to escalate the situation further, but the noise is genuinely affecting our productivity and causing stress.

AITA?

He didn’t start a fight, he just asked the 50sF neighbor to shift the loud work away from his partner’s meeting windows.

The second he explained how the noise is messing with his partner’s calls, the neighbor got offended and claimed they can renovate whenever they want.

When OP suggested scheduling the worst drilling for specific times or days, the neighbor shut it down hard and accused them of being too sensitive.

Now OP is stuck between not wanting escalation and dealing with the same hammering every day while his partner tries to work.
