Conniving Lawyer Tries To Lock A Clever IT Developer Out Of His Own System But It Backfired Instantly
"Money is like oxygen. It only becomes vitally important when you don't have enough of it to live on..."
Some people see a contract and think it means trust, but this story shows how fast that can go wrong.
A Redditor who works in IT took on a project for a lawyer with a bad reputation, even after hearing plenty of warnings. The arrangement started with an official contract, but the lawyer soon got demanding and tried to use the deal to squeeze more work out of OP.
OP saw the setup coming, built a backup plan, and waited for the right moment to use it.
Here's the original post of the Redditor
axelrafnOP described what he does in his line of work
axelrafnOP heard all of their warnings and was aware of them before he went into business with the lawyer
axelrafn
OP understood what the lawyer wanted, and they drafted an official contract
axelrafn
The lawyer started to become demanding and was slowly taking advantage of OP's labor
axelrafn
The lawyer continued to turn down many of OP's pitches and hard work
axelrafn
He tried to turn the contract against OP and used it to his advantage to speed up the project
axelrafn
That's when OP decided to stop playing nice.
After seeing the lawyer's personality up close, OP decided to create the foolproof plan
axelrafn
OP presented what was already done and ran it on his server
axelrafn
The lawyer didn't want OP to notice that he was satisfied with the work
axelrafn
He made an excuse to have it transferred to his server, but OP required a down payment. Soon enough, the lawyer emailed him proof of payment, and he uploaded the project onto his server.
axelrafn
The lawyer wasn't aware that OP already knew what he was up to and that the payment was suspiciously fake
axelrafn
The trap was already set.
Here's where the revenge comes in: if someone decided to remove OP from the system, it would mess up the database
axelrafn
This is exactly what the lawyer tried to do, and when he attempted to lock OP out, everything was deleted
axelrafn
OP then reported the lawyer's crime involving the fake payment to the authorities
axelrafn
OP also received better payment when he sold the system to one of the lawyer's competitors
axelrafn
In the edit, OP described the differences in the rules between the States and Europe, where he was actually from.

The comments had plenty to say about the lawyer's bad timing.
This is similar to the AITA where brothers demanded risky business funding after being told “no”.
People who already have a complete plan on how to screw someone who isn’t even making that much money in the first place

This lawyer got too complacent despite the bad reputation he’s receiving

It’s a good thing OP isn’t naive enough to completely ignore the warnings

And then they try to gain iron-clad loyalty by claiming that they’re family

Unfortunately, broken systems can never be fixed unless issues like these continue to prevail

Don’t be like the lawyer; be like OP. OP essentially became the point man for stopping the lawyer from committing the same crime.
People like this lawyer contribute to a broken system that takes advantage of more individuals and encourages bad people to do more bad things. It elevates the pedestal on which money sits even higher and creates more greed.
