Refusing to Share Family Cookie Recipe: Am I the Jerk?

"Debate over sharing a treasured family recipe with sister's new partner sparks tension - WIBTA for refusing? Reddit weighs in."

Some families treat recipes like heirlooms, and this one takes it seriously. A 30-year-old self-taught baker is guarding a grandmother’s “secret” chocolate chip cookie recipe like it’s a family passport, and she’s not about to hand it over just because someone asks nicely.

At a family dinner, her sister Laura’s new boyfriend, Mark, who just so happens to be a chef, tasted the cookies and immediately pushed for the recipe. He insisted it’s “just a recipe,” while Laura added fuel, saying since the cookies get made for everyone, the recipe should be shared. Now Laura is calling OP selfish and petty, and OP is stuck between keeping tradition intact and not turning sister time into a food fight.

Here’s where the cookie crumb trail gets messy.

So I'm (30M) a self-taught baker, and one thing I treasure is my grandmother's secret chocolate chip cookie recipe. This recipe has been passed down for three generations and is always a hit at family gatherings.

My sister, 'Laura', recently started dating someone new, 'Mark', who happens to be a chef. During a family dinner, Mark tasted my cookies and immediately asked for the recipe.

I politely declined, explaining that it's a family secret that I'm not comfortable sharing outside the family. Mark didn't take this well and started insisting, saying that it's just a recipe and shouldn't be kept secret.

Laura also chimed in, saying that since I made it for everyone, I should share. I stood my ground, reiterating that it's a special tradition in our family and not something to be shared casually.

Now Laura is upset with me, claiming I'm being selfish and petty for not sharing.

I feel conflicted because I don't want to create tension with my sister, but I also don't want to betray the tradition that's so important to me. So, WIBTA for refusing to share my grandmother's secret recipe with my sister's new partner who demanded it?

This is pretty close to the cousin’s new partner drama, where the secret cookie recipe sparked family tension.

Mark’s first request turned into a demand fast, right after he tasted OP’s grandmother’s chocolate chip cookies at that family dinner.

Laura jumped in and basically told OP the tradition only counts if it’s shared, which is how the tension went from awkward to heated.

OP kept repeating that it’s a special family tradition, even as Mark argued that recipes are meant to travel.

Now Laura is upset and OP is stuck wondering if saying “no” to Mark’s recipe request makes her the jerk in her own family.</p>
