Relationship Hits The Rocks As Man Chooses New Year’s Celebration With Friend Over Girlfriend, Since She Won’t Change Family Tradition For Him
A holiday tradition collides with new relationship boundaries.
This couple has been together for four years, but has never spent New Year’s Eve together, not even once. Strange right? But that’s the situation the OP (Original Poster) finds himself in…and it’s getting worrisome.
Since the beginning, OP’s girlfriend has always spent New Year’s with her parents and siblings. This is because her family has a family tradition where they believe that holidays like this should be spent together.
She’s the oldest at 24, and the only one who’s moved out…but she makes sure to always go back to be with her family during the holidays. Even though she and OP moved in together, the pattern stayed the same.
Some months back, they talked it through, with plans to make this upcoming celebration better. But she made it clear that he could travel with her and visit her family's house, but wouldn’t stay over since they aren’t married.
Ultimately, OP concluded that he would rather travel to see his own family instead.
Just as travel preparations were being finalized, his friends invited him on a snowmobiling trip over New Year’s. In addition, they planned to get an Airbnb and go partying at night.
Unfortunately for OP’s girlfriend, her plans for the holiday crashed. Her dad surprised everyone with a Hawaii trip over Christmas break, which was a great idea. However, her passport had expired, and it was almost impossible to get it expedited in time for the trip.
At this point, she reached out to OP, asking if he could join him for the holidays. He said yes for Christmas, but explained he’d still be leaving after Boxing Day for the trip with his friends.
That didn’t land well. She felt pushed aside and accused him of not prioritizing her. He further made efforts to include her in his travel plans, but she would rather he cancel entirely to spend the holidays with her.

The Reddit community is fully on OP’s side. They pointed out that his girlfriend is using him as a second option and would likely ditch him if her passport miraculously comes through.
The fact that OP still made efforts to include her in his plans, only for her to reject them, makes matters worse. As one Redditor said, she is the one choosing to be alone this holiday.
What do you think: was sticking to his plans reasonable, or should he have canceled to be with her?
