Roommate Breaks Pet-Free Lease with Puppy: AITA for Declining to Share Pet Deposit?
WIBTA for refusing to share pet expenses with roommate who violated a pet-free lease agreement, sparking tension over financial responsibilities?
A 27-year-old woman is stuck in roommate hell after her roommate showed up with a puppy, even though their lease explicitly bans pets. At first, it sounds like a simple “hey, you broke the agreement,” but it quickly turns into a money fight over who pays for the fallout.
OP and her roommate signed a pet-free lease because of allergies and the extra charges pets bring. Then last week, her roommate came home with an adorable puppy, didn’t ask first, and immediately started pitching the “it helps my mental health” argument when OP confronted her. The real twist? The roommate expects OP to split the pet deposit and any additional pet-related costs, even though OP never consented.
Now OP has to decide if refusing to pay makes her the villain, or if her roommate is the one breaking the rules.

So I'm (27F) currently sharing an apartment with my roommate (25F). When we signed the lease, we both agreed to a pet-free policy due to allergies and the extra charges associated with pets.
Everything was going fine until last week when my roommate came home with an adorable puppy without discussing it with me beforehand. I confronted her about it, reminding her of our lease agreement and the reasons we opted for a pet-free apartment in the first place.
She got defensive, saying she needed the companionship and that the puppy helps her mental health. While I sympathize with her situation, I still have concerns about dealing with allergens and potential damages.
She then dropped the b**b that she expects me to split the pet deposit and any additional charges that might come with having the puppy in the apartment. I was taken aback by this request as I never agreed to having a pet in our place, let alone paying for it.
I told her I won't be contributing to the pet expenses and that she needs to figure it out on her own. Now, she's upset with me, claiming I'm being selfish and unsupportive.
She even brought up how she covered for me when I had guests over against our lease terms. The tension between us is palpable, and I'm unsure if I'm truly in the wrong for not wanting to pitch in for a pet that I never consented to in the first place.
So, WIBTA for refusing to pay for the pet deposit and additional pet-related costs?
Communication is key in any shared living situation, especially when it comes to financial responsibilities.

When OP reminded her roommate about the pet-free lease, the puppy went from “cute surprise” to “legal and financial problem” fast.
By taking this proactive approach, roommates can create an environment where each person feels respected and accountable for their decisions.

The roommate got defensive and then dropped the bomb about splitting the pet deposit, right after OP raised the allergy and damage concerns.
This feels like the teen who saved for months, only to realize his $300 console would never be his.
Psychologists frequently observe that financial disagreements often stem from uncommunicated expectations. Cognitive biases can lead to misunderstandings about shared expenses. When individuals don't articulate their views on spending, it can create resentment.
In this case, a lack of communication about the financial implications of bringing a pet into a pet-free home has led to conflict. Establishing financial transparency and discussing expectations ahead of time can help alleviate these tensions.

OP also had to hear about how she covered for the roommate with guests, even though this time the issue is an actual lease violation.
This way, all parties are aware of their financial commitments.

With tension palpable and the puppy already in the apartment, OP is staring down a decision that could change the whole roommate dynamic.

The original poster's roommate disregarded a mutual agreement designed to protect both parties from allergens and financial strain.
This predicament underscores a fundamental conflict between individual desires and established agreements.
If she pays into a pet she never agreed to, she might as well be financing her roommate’s surprise.
