Roommate Conflict: AITA for Insisting on Equal Rent Split Despite Room Size Differences?

AITA for insisting on splitting rent equally when roommates suggest paying more for bigger rooms? Tension arises over fairness in rent division.

A 28-year-old woman refused to change her rent deal, even after her roommate Sarah brought up the size of the rooms like it was a brand-new problem.

For a year, the four of them lived in a spacious apartment and split the rent evenly, no drama, no spreadsheets, no debates. But once the conversation turned to fairness, Sarah and another roommate insisted the OP should pay more because she has the larger room. OP was shocked, since the bigger room was part of the original agreement, and she claims she shouldn’t be punished for choosing it at the start.

Now the apartment is tense, and OP wants to know if insisting on the equal split makes her the asshole.

Original Post

So I've been living with three roommates for the past year in a spacious apartment. We split the rent evenly, which has worked well until now.

Recently, one of my roommates, let's call her Sarah, brought up the idea of allocating rent based on room size.

This led to a discussion where Sarah and another roommate suggested I should pay more for my larger room. I was taken aback because we've always split rent equally, regardless of room sizes.

I firmly stated that I believe splitting rent evenly is fair and that I shouldn't be penalized for choosing a bigger room at the beginning. This has caused tension in our apartment, with Sarah and the other roommate insisting that it's only fair to adjust the rent.

I feel like they're trying to take advantage of the situation, but they see it as a matter of fairness. So, AITA?

This also echoes the fight in the AITA about refusing equal rent after a room renovation, where the unequal setup sparked major tension.

That’s when Sarah decided to reopen the rent conversation, even though they had been splitting it evenly for an entire year.

The argument got sharper when the other roommate backed Sarah and framed OP’s bigger room as a reason to charge more.

OP pushed back hard, saying the deal was fair from day one and she shouldn’t be penalized for room size after moving in.

Now every time rent comes up, Sarah and her roommate keep calling it “fair,” while OP thinks they’re trying to take advantage.

If they can’t agree on the rent they already set, OP might be the one who needs a new place.
