Roommate Ignores Allergy Concerns, Adopts Cat Without Consent
AITA for refusing to let my roommate adopt a new pet without my consent? Roommate disregards my allergies, tension ensues - Reddit weighs in.
Emily didn’t just bring home a cat, she brought home a whole new problem, right over a roommate allergy that was already on the lease and already known. And somehow, she still acted surprised when her decision hit OP in the face, literally, with sneezing and discomfort in the shared apartment.
Here’s the mess: OP (28M) has a mild dog allergy, nothing catastrophic, but enough to cause real symptoms. Emily (27F) has always respected that, until she decided last week to adopt a kitten anyway.
Now the cat is in the apartment, OP’s allergies are flaring, and the question isn’t just “AITA,” it’s how this went from a simple adoption to a full-on roommate standoff.

So I'm (28M) currently sharing an apartment with my roommate (27F), let's call her Emily, for the past year. We get along pretty well, and overall it's been a good living situation.
For background, I have a mild allergy to dogs, nothing too severe but enough to cause discomfort. Emily has always known about this and respected it, so we never had any issues regarding pets before.
Quick context, our lease explicitly states that any new pets need both roommates' consent. Now, here's where the conflict arises.
Last week, Emily suddenly approached me with the idea of adopting a new pet, specifically a cat. She's always been a cat person, and she found this adorable kitten at a shelter.
She was so excited, but I immediately hesitated due to my allergies. I explained this to her, hoping she would understand, but she brushed it off, saying that the cat would stay in her room most of the time and that I could take allergy medication.
I was taken aback by her dismissive attitude towards my health concerns. Despite my objections, she went ahead and adopted the cat without informing me.
This decision left me feeling disrespected and disregarded. It's been a few days, and my allergies have started acting up just from the cat's presence in our shared space.
I confronted Emily about her breaking our agreement, but she insists I should just deal with it. This situation has caused tension between us, and I'm at a loss on how to proceed.
So AITA?

OP thought Emily would pause after hearing about his dog allergy, but she showed up with shelter excitement instead.
The moment Emily said she could just take allergy medication, the whole “we both agreed” situation started cracking.
After a few days of symptoms in the shared space, OP finally confronted Emily about breaking the lease.
Emily’s response, “just deal with it,” turns this kitten purchase into a trust issue, not a pet issue.

He’s not the problem for reacting to a roommate who ignored the agreement, but he might be happier living somewhere the cat isn’t a surprise.
