Roommate Overusing Electricity Refuses Fair Utility Split: AITA?

AITA for confronting my roommate about overusing electricity and suggesting we split bills fairly based on individual usage, leading to a heated argument and her refusal to consider any changes?

A 28-year-old woman is fed up with a roommate who seems perfectly happy to run up the electricity bill and split the cost down the middle.

In this Reddit story, the two women share a two-bedroom apartment and divide all expenses evenly, until the OP notices a sharp jump in their power bill. After checking with the energy company, she learns the extra cost is tied to her roommate leaving lights, fans, and electronics on all night, and that is where the argument really starts.

Now the roommate says the original agreement gives her the right to use as much electricity as she wants, while the OP feels stuck paying for someone else’s habits. Was she wrong to push for a fairer split? Read on.

So I'm (28F) currently living with my roommate (26F) in a two-bedroom apartment. We split all the bills, including utilities, evenly.

Recently, I noticed a significant increase in our electricity bill. After checking with the energy company, I found out that the spike was due to excessive usage, mainly during the night.

I confronted my roommate about it, and she admitted to leaving lights, fans, and electronics on all night. I explained that this was unfair to me financially, as we split the bills evenly.

I suggested either she covers the extra cost due to her excess usage or we find a way to track individual usage and split the bills accordingly. However, she got defensive and claimed that since we agreed to split bills evenly, she has the right to use as much electricity as she wants.

This led to a heated argument, and now she's refusing to consider any changes. I'm frustrated by the unjust financial burden she's placing on me due to her excessive electricity consumption.

AITA?
