Roommates Rowdy Dog Causing Strife in Pet-Friendly Apartment: AITA for Setting Boundaries?
AITA for insisting my roommate's dog stays out of our pet-friendly apartment due to my cat's well-being, despite roommate's opposition?
A 28-year-old woman refused to let her roommate’s huge, hyper dog run wild in the shared apartment, and now she’s asking strangers if she’s the one being unreasonable. Her cat is older, has health issues, and has started living in a constant state of stress because this dog keeps crashing into her space like it owns the place.
Here’s the mess: her roommate, a 25-year-old guy who also loves pets, got a large breed with tons of energy. OP has asked, politely but clearly, for the dog to stay out of her cat’s area or at least be supervised. But the dog still roams freely, OP keeps finding scratch marks, and her cat has even been scratched badly enough to need a vet visit.
Now the roommate is mad, and OP is stuck wondering if she’s protecting her cat or overstepping in their pet-friendly home.
Original Post
So, I'm (28F) sharing an apartment with my roommate (25M). We both love pets and our apartment is pet-friendly.
I have a cat, but my roommate recently got a dog, a large breed with tons of energy. The issue is that the dog is quite rowdy and keeps entering my cat's space, causing my cat a lot of stress.
I've found scratch marks on furniture, and my cat is always on edge. For background, my cat is older and has health issues, so I'm very protective of her.
Despite me politely asking my roommate to keep his dog out of my cat's area or supervise closely, he hasn't been consistent. The dog keeps running around freely and my roommate is often busy with work.
This has led to several altercations between the pets, and my cat even got scratched once, requiring a vet visit. I've explained the situation in detail, but my roommate feels I'm overreacting and that 'animals will be animals.' I truly adore animals, including his dog, but my priority is my cat's well-being.
Recently, after another incident, I insisted that his dog stays out of my cat's space entirely. He got upset, claiming I'm being unreasonable.
I feel torn because I don't want any animosity, but my cat's comfort and health come first. So AITA?
Understanding a pet's behavior is crucial in shared living spaces.

The day OP found fresh scratch marks and her cat was hiding on edge again, it stopped feeling like “animals being animals” and started feeling like a pattern.
Pet behaviorists frequently recommend using positive reinforcement training when introducing new pets into a home. This method can help dogs learn appropriate behaviors around other animals. By rewarding calm, non-aggressive behavior when the dog is near the cat, both animals can feel safer and more secure in their shared space.
Implementing structured introductions, such as gradual visual contact and scent exchange, can further ease the transition. Patience and consistency in training foster a peaceful coexistence.

Every time the roommate was busy at work and the dog was left running around freely, the cat’s “safe space” turned into a free-for-all.
This debate is similar to the roommate arguing about building a separate room for the cat, and calling it unfair.
Setting boundaries is essential for both the pets' and roommates' well-being. Allowing one pet to dominate a shared space can lead to stress and anxiety for the other, which is detrimental to their health.
Creating a written agreement that outlines each pet's designated areas and routines can mitigate conflict and ensure that both animals feel secure in their shared home.

After the latest altercation, OP finally drew a hard line, telling him the dog stays completely out of her cat’s zone.
Establishing ground rules before bringing a new pet into a shared space is vital for preventing misunderstandings.

That’s when the roommate flipped it on her, claiming she’s the problem instead of admitting the dog keeps entering her cat’s space.

In the ongoing saga of roommates navigating the complexities of pet ownership, this particular situation underscores the vital importance of establishing boundaries. The conflict arises not from a lack of affection for animals but from a fundamental disagreement on how to manage their presence within the shared living space.
Moreover, the need for open communication cannot be overstated. As the roommates grapple with their differing expectations regarding their dog’s behavior, it becomes evident that a failure to discuss responsibilities can lead to escalating tensions. By fostering an environment of cooperation and understanding, they have the opportunity to not only accommodate their pets but also safeguard their own personal space and peace of mind.
The conflict between the roommates stems from a fundamental difference in their priorities and understanding of pet care. The original poster's protective instinct over her older cat, which is likely rooted in attachment and concern for its well-being, clashes with her roommate's more laissez-faire attitude towards his dog.
He may love his dog, but OP’s cat needs boundaries more than his feelings do.
Before you judge, see how the roommate’s cat disrupted work, and she limited its freedom.
