Should I Lend Money to a Friend for an Art Opportunity I Doubt?
AITA for refusing to support my friend's art exhibition financially despite concerns about her financial history and marketability of her work?
A simple favor is turning into a friendship test for one 27-year-old woman, and money is at the center of it.
Her close friend Sarah, 25, wants a loan to help cover an art opportunity she sees as a major break, but the original poster is not convinced the exhibition will lead anywhere. With Sarah's shaky money habits and a history of borrowing from friends, the request feels less like support and more like a risk.
Now the question is whether backing a friend's dream means saying yes, even when the doubts are hard to ignore. Read on.
I (27F) have a close friend, 'Sarah' (25F), who recently asked me to lend her some money to invest in a work opportunity. Sarah has always been passionate about art and has been offered a chance to showcase her work in an upcoming exhibition.
However, I personally don't think her art is marketable and the exhibition might not lead to any real opportunities. Sarah is convinced this is her big break.
For context, I've seen Sarah struggle with finances before. She's terrible at budgeting and often relies on borrowing money from friends.
Despite my concerns, I feel conflicted. On one hand, I want to support Sarah's dreams, but on the other hand, I don't want to enable her financially irresponsible behavior.
So AITA?
That is where the money part starts to overshadow the friendship.

For example, assessing the friend's past repayment habits or their ability to generate income from their art can provide critical insights. If there are doubts, it might be worth suggesting alternative support, like helping them find grants or exhibitions that don't require upfront financial investment.

That conversation is probably going to decide how this friendship feels after all of this.
