Many companies will stop at nothing to find qualified, competent individuals for their teams. This is because a group of capable and dedicated workers is essential to realizing entrepreneurial ambitions.

Hiring top personnel is more important than ever due to the fierce competition in today's market and economy. The OP started her fashion business many years ago.

It began very small and with a low budget, but the OP was fortunate enough to expand it to where it is now. The OP has a 23-year-old stepdaughter, Mia, who has dreamed of working in the fashion world since she was young.

The OP married Mia's father when she was 15 and took many courses to improve herself. The OP says she’s good at picking fabrics and colors; however, she isn’t skilled at designing.

OP's husband asked her to hire Mia as a designer in her company, so she told him that Mia should apply for the job. Mia should also submit her portfolio for the OP and the team to review her skills.

This shocked her husband, but they did not follow her request, and things went south from that point.

Professional Boundaries in Family Relationships

When family members work together, establishing clear professional boundaries is crucial. A study from the Journal of Organizational Behavior explains that mixing family and work can complicate relationships and lead to conflicts.

In this case, declining a family member's request for employment can be viewed as a boundary-setting action that, while necessary, may also cause emotional fallout.

OP has offered the following explanation for why they think they might be the AH:

1. I didn’t accept my stepdaughter Mia in my company 2. Being a fashion designer has been her dream for so long, and she wanted me to give her an opportunity

Research emphasizes that clear communication about roles and expectations can prevent misunderstandings in family businesses. Psychologists recommend creating written agreements that outline responsibilities and performance criteria to minimize emotional conflicts.

This approach can help family members feel respected and valued, even when not all familial requests can be accommodated.

The OP left this in the comments

She can be a stylist for a certain designer. But I made a rule that designers who get accepted get to hire their own staff, and most of the designers I have already brought in had stylists and even models before. She could definitely apply, but I can’t force her on any designer. She’s a pretty good stylist, though; as I said, designers already come in with their own team, so they already have a stylist they are used to.

Some companies will concentrate on the hiring process and enhance their recruitment techniques by resolving to hire only the top candidates. More significantly, exceptional talent aspires to work only with the best in order to further hone their craft.

OP states that the job thrives purely on skills, so even if she included her stepdaughter, she wouldn’t make money because she wouldn’t sell. Eventually, the OP was declared not the AH.
