Surprise Pet Adoption: AITA for Keeping It Secret from My Partner?

AITA for secretly planning to adopt a pet behind my partner's back, leading to a dilemma on whether to reveal the surprise or risk hurting them?

He and his partner have been together for four years, both loving animals, but work schedules kept the dream on hold. Secretly, he started the adoption process for a shelter dog he was sure she would adore, keeping it totally off the radar. Then, right when adoption day was about to happen, she revealed she had found a dog she wanted to adopt and asked for his opinion, leaving him to pretend he was just as surprised as she was.

Now he’s stuck wondering whether to come clean, or let the secret implode later.

Original Post

I (28M) and my partner (26F) have been together for four years now. Recently, my partner started talking about how much they want to adopt a pet, specifically a dog.

They have always been an animal lover, but due to our work schedules, we never went ahead with it. However, secretly, I started the adoption process for a shelter dog that I knew my partner would absolutely love.

I thought it would be a great surprise for them. I didn't mention anything to my partner because I wanted it to be a big reveal and see the joy on their face.

Just as everything was set for the adoption day, my partner sat me down and told me they had found a dog they wanted to adopt. They were so excited and asked for my opinion.

I was shocked and didn't know how to react. I didn't want to ruin their happiness, so I played along and acted surprised.

Now I'm torn. Should I reveal that I already started the adoption process without their knowledge, or should I continue with my plan, knowing that it might hurt them to find out I kept this secret from them?

So, AITA?
