Employee Quits After Being Forced To Work Thanksgiving
Thanksgiving is one of those times when we love to take time off to be with our family.
Thanksgiving shifts fast when a manager says one thing and schedules another. In this case, an employee had already been approved for time off, only to be told later that she was expected to work the holiday anyway.
That kind of mix-up can turn a simple holiday plan into a workplace standoff. Here, the boss tried to force the issue, the employee pushed back, and the whole exchange ended with her quitting on the spot.
It is a messy reminder that holiday scheduling can bring out the worst in some managers. Read on.
Thanksgiving is a time when many people like to request off to spend time with their loved ones instead of working.
Karolina Grabowska on PexelsThanksgiving is supposed to be a time for family, not last-minute scheduling drama.
Matt seems to be the boss, and the girl is sharing these screenshots from their conversation the day she quit her job.
As you can see, Matt is saying that he needs her to work, but she responds by stating that she's already approved for that weekend off.

He then proceeds to tell her that he scheduled her on the two days she was approved off.
We admire her stance because she didn't budge at all on working Thanksgiving.
That is where the conversation really started to go sideways.
The ultimatum clearly didn't work out as he thought it would.
Matt proceeds to threaten her job and tells her it's non-negotiable. She then responds by saying that she quits and won't be coming to her shift that night either.
People then started commenting on the situation.
This is exactly how we would have responded because he needs to put everything in writing.
NumbSurprise
People had plenty to say about the way this played out.
This is true; there was no negotiation, and he's probably very mad at himself.

I'm not sure why bosses ever threaten our jobs because they will always end up with the short end of the stick after we quit.
Possible-Whole45
That's exactly what it was, and I'm glad that we can all see through it.

Managers just make it so hard on themselves when it comes to scheduling. If you can't schedule, then just don't open. It's a holiday anyway.

Looks like Matt is going to lose a couple of his employees before he realizes what he's doing wrong.
BasTidChiken
I agree with this 100% because if you don't have a full staff, then just close.
SeraphymCrashing
Yep, you won.

He thought that it would encourage her to come in so that she could maintain her job, but it doesn't always work out this way.
Vargoroth
These are both huge problems that we see often in businesses like this.

Someone asked for an update, and we are not disappointed at all.
littlehollie
That update made the whole situation even clearer.
Well, this was an interesting story. Unfortunately, this happens a lot.
After hearing about this situation, I think many of us would have done the exact same thing that she did. Obviously, this boss had this blow up in his face, and it didn't go at all as he had planned.
Ultimately, we can see that the employee obviously didn't mind, and she's content with her decision.
Nobody wants to be forced into holiday shifts after getting approval off.
