Why Monsters University Is Suddenly a Hulu Hit Again as Pixar Eyes a Monsters, Inc. Return
Monsters University has risen to No. 4 on Hulu as Pixar works on a third Monsters, Inc. film.
Monsters University is finding a new audience on Hulu at a moment when the Monsters, Inc. franchise is back in the spotlight. The 2013 Pixar prequel has climbed into the service’s movie Top 10 as seasonal viewing habits and fresh sequel news push Mike and Sulley back into the conversation.
Hulu’s movie chart has taken on a very October feel, with family friendly spooky picks sitting beside much heavier horror titles. Coraline is at the top of the list, Hocus Pocus 2 has moved up four places to No. 5, and The Substance is at No. 9.
In the middle of that mix is Monsters University, which has risen two spots to No. 4 after spending seven days on the chart. That placement says a lot about how well the film fits this time of year. It is a monster movie, but one built for a broader movie night crowd, making it an easy match for viewers looking for something seasonal without diving fully into horror.
Why this prequel still works
Released in 2013 and directed by Dan Scanlon, Monsters University goes back to the college years of Mike Wazowski and James P. Sullivan. Instead of continuing the story from the first film, it shows how the pair began as rivals before becoming best friends.
The movie also stands out within its own franchise for how well it performed commercially. It earned 743.5 million dollars worldwide, topping the 528.7 million taken in by the original Monsters, Inc. from 2001. That strong result helped keep the property active and was followed by the series Monsters at Work, which ran for two seasons.
Its current Hulu rise makes sense on more than one level. The movie’s friendly monster setting fits October naturally, and it is resurfacing just as interest in where the franchise goes next has picked up again.
What Pixar has and has not said about the next chapter
The renewed attention around Monsters University comes after a major update for the franchise earlier this year. Pixar is developing a third film in the Monsters, Inc. series, with the project first disclosed in a Wall Street Journal profile focused on the studio. The news surfaced as Pete Docter, Pixar’s chief creative officer and the director of the first Monsters, Inc., outlined the company’s upcoming plans.
There is still very little concrete information about the new film. No director, writer, or cast members have been attached so far. It is also not known whether the project will continue directly from the original story or take a different approach, the way Monsters University did as a prequel.
The timing is notable. The franchise is approaching its 25th anniversary, and the planned movie would be the first full length entry in the series in more than a decade.
The Monsters update was part of a wider Pixar roadmap that also included Toy Story 5 set for June, The Incredibles 3 dated for 2028, and a second Coco movie expected in 2029. Taken together, those plans show how much the studio is leaning on some of its best known titles.
For now, though, the clearest sign of interest is on Hulu. A college set Pixar comedy about future scarers is climbing the chart again, and that suggests audiences are still ready to spend time in this world before the next film even takes shape.
