Mistakes Were Made When This Redditor Creeped Out A Woman On Their First Date By Telling Her That Pepper Spray Was Useless And Ineffective
Of all the things you should say on a first date, this isn't one of them.
First dates are almost always filled with anxiety and stress because you don't know what to say that might offend the other person. People going on first dates are battling a ton of emotions, from butterflies in their stomachs to a racing heartbeat.
Some even sweat profusely because they're too anxious. Others start to stutter, but after some time, when you realize that the person you're out on a date with isn't a serial killer, your hormones slowly start to settle.
Suddenly, you act like yourself and have no intention of impressing the other person by creating a fake personality. That's a good thing, but there are subtle dangers in becoming too comfortable around your date.
It's never a good idea to get too comfortable. And if you do get comfortable, don't forget the context.
You can't just tell someone how to sharpen their butcher's knife and expect them to remain calm about it. You've got to provide them with context and, basically, ensure they don't think you're a psychotic serial killer.
Something similar happened to our Redditor, who goes by the name throwaway_iansdsdf. He creeped out a woman he'd just met an hour ago by telling her that her pepper spray wouldn't be very effective if she intended to defend herself.
What started out great ended with the woman running for her life. SMH.
We'll let throwaway_iansdsdf explain.
Aww, two people on a first date... so magical.
Reddit / throwaway_iansdsdfNot the best thing to say, though.
Reddit / throwaway_iansdsdfExactly, you probably creeped her out.
Reddit / throwaway_iansdsdf
You probably have; I'm sorry, bud.
Reddit / throwaway_iansdsdf
Exactly! Without context, conversations can stop.
Reddit / throwaway_iansdsdf

All powerful things come in small packages.
Reddit / throwaway_iansdsdf
That's creepy, PaulTR88.
Reddit / throwaway_iansdsdf
That would've escalated matters.
Reddit / throwaway_iansdsdf
Yeah, that's probably a good idea.
Reddit / throwaway_iansdsdf
LOL.
Reddit / throwaway_iansdsdf
I'm sure it wasn't fun if that was the case.
Reddit / throwaway_iansdsdf

Well, as it turns out, things weren't so bad for OP because the woman called him and apologized for running off. He also apologized for his strange comment about her pepper spray.
The best part is that they're going out again! What's funny is that the woman stumbled upon his post on Reddit and, after laughing her head off, they're now comfortably sharing screenshots of funny/weird comments with each other.
So people asked him if he could recommend a good pepper spray, and he said, "I am not an expert on defense spray. We were just some bored soldiers with some examples."
Wow. It's crazy how things work out in the end, right? While we're happy for OP, fingers crossed he wouldn't whip out a butcher's knife in the middle of nowhere or talk about a deserted refrigerator in the garage.
That's just plain creepy.
So this isn't a TIFU after all, is it?
