Vegan Cat vs. Picky Dog: AITA for Refusing to Share Pet Food?
AITA for refusing to share my vegan cat's food with my roommate's picky eater pet dog, sparking a debate on pet dietary needs and boundaries?
A 28-year-old woman refused to share her cat’s vegan food, and somehow that turned into a roommate war. Her cat, Whiskers, is on a strict vegan diet because of meat-based allergies, so the food is not just “a preference,” it’s a health line she will not cross.
Then her roommate, 25-year-old Max’s owner, showed up with a problem of his own. Max is a picky dog with specific dietary needs, and he wanted to sample Whiskers’ vegan pet food “just a little,” because finding something he’ll actually eat has been a struggle.
What starts as a casual taste request quickly becomes a full-on tension spiral, and now OP is wondering if she’s being selfish or just protecting her cat.

So I'm (28F), and I have a cat named Whiskers who I've raised on a strict vegan diet due to allergies to meat-based products. My roommate (25M) recently got a new dog, Max, who's a picky eater and has specific dietary requirements.
The other day, my roommate asked if he could try feeding a bit of Whiskers' vegan pet food to Max, as he's struggling to find a suitable food that Max enjoys. I firmly refused, explaining the importance of Whiskers' diet and how it wouldn't be suitable for Max's needs.
Despite my roommate's insistence and claims that a small taste wouldn't hurt, I stood my ground. Now, tensions are high, and my roommate thinks I'm being unreasonable and selfish for not helping him out with Max's food situation.
I believe that each pet should have their own tailored diet, especially when health issues are involved. Am I being too strict and selfish by not sharing Whiskers' food with Max, even if it's just a small amount for a taste test?
I honestly don't know if I'm wrong here.

This also echoes the roommate debate over a lavish pet spa day for their shared cat, where pet care priorities turned into conflict.

OP shut down the idea of Max trying Whiskers’ vegan food, even after her roommate kept insisting it would be harmless.
The whole thing escalated fast once Max’s “picky eater” problem collided with Whiskers’ allergy-driven diet.
Now the roommate is acting like OP owes him a solution for Max’s food situation, while OP sticks to “each pet, each diet.”
With tensions high between a cat household and a new dog, OP’s refusal is getting framed as selfish instead of protective.
